About the role

The role of Silversmith at Tiffany & Co. involves forming and fabricating silver trophy, statement, and retail pieces based on technical drawings, specifications, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This position includes participating in training, documentation, and research and development of new items.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely by following all safety procedures and reporting incidents promptly to supervisors.
  • Interpret blueprints and fabricate items according to design and production artwork to meet company Quality Assurance (QA) standards within prescribed timelines.
  • Ensure detail-oriented work, in-process QA, and minimize inventory failures while handling a wide range of products requiring complex fitting, machining, and soldering.
  • Utilize various torch sizes and types for different stages of fabrication, including high-temp 800 and low-temp 560 silver solder, and apply correct sequences of solder stop-out, files, burs, sanding belts, and scotch stones.
  • Hand form spouts, handles, and other hollow components using hydraulic press, wooden dies, hammers, and stakes.
  • Hallmark items and use aluminum and steel hammers for raising and planishing during fabrication and repair.
  • Minimize porosity in solder seams and castings using laser weld and appropriate filler wire, rotary planisher, Swiss hammer, and steel planishing hammers.
  • Use chasing tools, punches, and engravers for complex fabrication practices.
  • Operate power equipment such as drill press, flex shaft, draw bench, jump shears, band saw, disc and belt sander, power press, kick press, spinning lathe, machining lathe, and any other tools essential to the job.
  • Document and organize work instructions, drawings, notes, capture in-process images, and assist in writing SOPs for new and existing products.
  • Participate in quoting, R&D, manufacturing/design reviews, and product signoffs of new products.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams on new and existing process improvements and repairs on historic items.
  • Maintain the production schedule and assist in co-workers' tasks when needed.
  • Participate in team tasks, mentor apprentices, and on-board new silversmiths.
  • Support tours and filming as needed for the Hollowware department.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates should possess a strong background in silver fabrication, including experience with torches, drills, and power equipment. They should have a detailed understanding of silver soldering techniques, annealing processes, and metalworking tools. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.

Skills

  • Proficiency in silver soldering techniques, including high-temp 800 and low-temp 560 soldering.
  • Knowledge of annealing temperatures for various metals (gold, sterling silver, brass, bronze, copper, and ferrous metals).
  • Experience with hand forging of steel punches, chasing tools, snaring irons, and stakes.
  • Ability to use chasing tools, punches, and engravers for complex fabrication practices.
  • Skilled in operating power equipment such as drill press, flex shaft, draw bench, jump shears, band saw, disc and belt sander, power press, kick press, spinning lathe, machining lathe, and any other tools essential to the job.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $XX,XXX - $XXXX per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

This position typically works a standard Monday through Friday schedule, with occasional overtime as needed to meet production goals.
