Facilitates communication among deaf, hearing, and hard of hearing students, parents, and staff at The American Sign Language and English Secondary School (02M047). Provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and/or transliteration services to ensure equitable access to classroom instruction, school activities, IEP services, parent engagement activities, and other school-related functions.

Responsibilities

  • Provides interpretation (between spoken English and American Sign Language) or transliteration (between spoken English and Signed English) for deaf and hard of hearing students, parents, and staff.
  • Interprets classroom instruction, small group instruction, counseling sessions, related services, assessments, school assemblies, field trips, extracurricular activities, and school-sponsored events.
  • Supports student access to instruction and participation in all educational programs and activities consistent with IEP requirements and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Interprets during parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, CSE meetings, disciplinary conferences, and other school-related meetings involving deaf and hard of hearing students, parents, or staff.
  • Collaborates with teachers, related service providers, and administrators to support effective communication and student access to the curriculum.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and NYCPS policies.
  • Participates in relevant professional learning and school-based meetings, as assigned.
  • Maintains professional standards and adheres to the Code of Professional Conduct established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).

Requirements

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English.
  • Certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc., or completion of a Basic Interpreter Training Program at a recognized institution, and a 3.5 or higher score on the OSLIS interpreter screening assessment.
  • Associate degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret and transliterate in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a group setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with Students with Disabilities, families, and school staff in a diverse education environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Additional skills such as trilingual interpreting (Spanish), legal interpreting, and familiarity with the public school system.

Pay

$82,763 - $103,556 (Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
