SI Leader Pre-Calculus Iron Mountain

About the Role
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide Supplemental Instruction (SI) for Pre-Calculus students at the Bay College Iron Mountain campus. SI is an internationally recognized academic support program targeting traditionally difficult courses. SI Leaders facilitate regularly scheduled study sessions where students compare notes, discuss course materials, develop creative study tools, practice problem solving, and prepare for exams. SI Leaders attend the course with students and prepare study materials for use during sessions.
Responsibilities
- Attend training prior to the start of the semester.
- Attend all scheduled class sessions (Lecture M-R 10:00-11:15 AM CST).
- Plan and hold two one-hour SI sessions each week (SI T/R 9:00-10:00 AM CST).
- Hold three office hours throughout the week to enhance SI session planning and provide services to students.
- Meet with the course instructor weekly to ensure accuracy and relevancy of SI session material.
- Meet with the SI Manager weekly to assess and enhance the effectiveness of SI sessions through continuous improvement protocols.
- Take notes and complete all assignments and readings for the course.
- Advertise SI to students and take attendance at each session, reporting weekly attendance to the instructor and semester attendance to the SI Manager.
- Utilize session planning forms to prepare organized, effective SI sessions.
- Create a comfortable and supportive learning environment during SI sessions.
- Teach study skills and use collaborative learning techniques to help students master course material.
- Administer and record data for SI evaluation surveys.
- Mentor and advise students, referring them to other support services available within the college.
- Attend regular training sessions provided by college staff.
- Provide services to students utilizing the Student Success Center during office hours.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated competence (at least an A-) in MATH 140, Pre-Calculus or a comparable course.
- Completed the equivalent of two years of college course work.
- Strong foundation in math or related field.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Tutoring experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS/BA in math or related field.
- Experience in Supplemental Instruction.
- Teaching experience.
Pay
Minimum Salary: $15.95/hour • Maximum Salary: $18.77/hour
Schedule
- 8 months per year.
- 10 hours worked per week.
- Must be available for:
- Lecture: Monday–Thursday, 10:00–11:15 AM CST
- SI Sessions: Tuesday & Thursday, 9:00–10:00 AM CST
