About the Role

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide Supplemental Instruction (SI) for Human Biology students at the Bay College Iron Mountain campus. SI is an internationally recognized academic support program that targets traditionally difficult courses. Students come together in regularly scheduled study sessions to compare notes, discuss course materials, develop creative study tools, practice problem solving, and prepare for exams. These sessions are facilitated by trained SI Leaders who attend the course with students and prepare study materials for use during SI sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Attend training prior to the start of the semester.
  • Attend all scheduled class sessions (T 11:00–1:50 and TH 11:00–12:50).
  • Plan and hold two one-hour SI sessions each week (Tues. 2:00–2:50 and Thurs. 1:00–1:50).
  • Hold three office hours throughout the week to enhance SI session planning and provide services to students.
  • Meet with the course instructor weekly to ensure accuracy and relevancy of the SI session material.
  • Meet with the SI Manager weekly during the semester to assess and enhance the effectiveness of the SI sessions through continuous improvement protocols.
  • Take notes and complete all assignments and readings for the course.
  • Advertise SI to students.
  • Take attendance at each SI session and report weekly attendance to the instructor and semester attendance to the SI Manager.
  • Utilize session planning forms to prepare organized, effective SI sessions.
  • Create a comfortable and supportive learning environment during the SI sessions.
  • Teach study skills and use collaborative learning techniques to help students master course material.
  • Administer and record data for SI evaluation surveys.
  • Mentor and advise students on ancillary topics, such as referring them to other needed support services available within the college.
  • Attend regular training sessions provided by college staff.
  • Provide services to students utilizing the Student Success Center during office hours.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated competence (at least an A-) in BIOL 104, Human Biology or a comparable course.
  • Completed the equivalent of two years of college course work.
  • Strong foundation in biology or related field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Tutoring experience.

Qualifications

  • Preferred: BS/BA in biology or related field.
  • Preferred: Experience in Supplemental Instruction.
  • Preferred: Teaching experience.

Pay

Minimum Salary: $15.95/hour · Maximum Salary: $18.77/hour

Schedule

  • Lecture/Lab: Tuesday 11:00 AM–1:50 PM and Thursday 11:00 AM–12:50 PM
  • SI Sessions: Tuesday 2:00–2:50 PM and Thursday 1:00–1:50 PM
  • Three additional office hours per week (flexible scheduling)
