About the role

This mechanic position is responsible for performing inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered heavy equipment and/or related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. Works independently or as a member of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.

Mid-level position requiring more than seven years of experience and/or demonstrated job-relevant knowledge and skills. A Level IV Technician has broad knowledge of the field’s standard and technical concepts, practices, and procedures, and relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of standard, complex, and technical tasks; is self-starting and requires minimal supervision; often serves as a team member on large projects.

Responsibilities

  • Model, promote, reinforce, and reward consistent use of HOLT’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures
  • Disassemble and assemble machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling
  • Rebuild, repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components
  • Demonstrate good customer relations and support; communicate customer needs to shop management
  • Plan and control cost of repair jobs
  • Complete parts orders and identify parts for return
  • Provide task- and behavior-oriented mentoring and training to others
  • Maintain all equipment and work areas in good, clean, and orderly condition
  • Complete all repair-related documents in a timely manner
  • Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies; comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards
  • Work overtime as required by workload and customer needs
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities (e.g., ProTech Technician Training Paths)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of diesel-powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred
  • Ability and knowledge to read and use schematics and diagrams preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred
  • Must have or acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)

Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt-moving equipment preferred
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
  • Quality control analysis skills—conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
  • Operation and control skills—controlling operations of equipment or systems
  • Equipment selection skills—determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
  • Ability to read, write, and understand information
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina
  • Ascends and descends with gradual or continuous progress using both hands and feet; climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment
  • Able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions; required to visually inspect work

Work Environment

  • Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity
  • Noise level may be loud at times
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places

Travel

Some travel is expected for this position.
