About the role

Meridian Waste is seeking an experienced Shop Manager to lead our Columbia, SC maintenance team and keep our growing fleet of new refuse trucks safe, reliable, and ready to serve the community. The Shop Manager oversees drivers and helpers, implements tactical initiatives to drive functional excellence and budget achievement, and ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, operating, regulatory, accounting, ethics, and other standards.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and provide leadership to achieve and communicate about safety goals and objectives.
  • Work to remove unsafe conditions or situations from drivers’ routes.
  • Partner with the sales team to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions on new routes or for new customers.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance department to ensure all equipment remains in working order and compliant with safety standards.
  • Oversee effective safety and accident prevention programs to maintain a safe and productive work environment.
  • Engage employees in active participation to instill a culture of safety through personal commitment and outreach.
  • Provide service that meets or exceeds customer expectations, including resolving service requests and equipment breakdowns.
  • Interact with customers to address issues and improve the overall customer experience.
  • Establish and manage productivity goals, labor hours, and disposal expenses per agreed plans.
  • Lead drivers to exceed productivity goals and optimize routes for efficiency.
  • Support and execute service delivery while actively contributing to fleet quality and maintenance.
  • Build a collaborative, communicative team environment and drive employee engagement.
  • Develop talent on the team, understand employees’ career goals, and provide coaching for advancement.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned, including following all safety policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field.
  • 3 years of related supervisory experience.
  • Experience in the Solid Waste Industry preferred.
  • Able to direct a large staff and demonstrate strong leadership skills.
  • Process-oriented and results-driven with a commitment to organizational success.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborative team player with creative thinking and ethical behavior.
  • Proven judgment in hiring and developing high-performance teams.

Physical Demands

  • Light lifting (50-100 pounds).
  • Work in a shop environment.

Work Environment

  • Warehouse/Shop environment.
  • Travel as required for the position.
