About the role

The Shop Foreman monitors and assists the Branch Manager in daily shop operations, participates in the maintenance and repair of owned vehicles and equipment, and ensures technicians address customer needs. This hands-on role coordinates service operations, reviews work orders, checks repair progress, ensures compliance, addresses customer inquiries, and trains new employees. The Foreman mentors service technicians to maintain operational efficiency and effective completion of work.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect equipment for safety, needed repairs, and maintain to manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose complex issues with heavy equipment powertrain, hydraulic, and electrical systems using computer analyzers.
  • Complete preventative maintenance tasks such as changing filters, checking fluids, and filling tires.
  • Supervise and participate in daily maintenance and repair of cars, trucks, heavy equipment, small engine equipment, and mowers.
  • Prioritize equipment repair based on business needs and demands.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to technicians using schematics, inspection forms, work orders, and service bulletins.
  • Maintain and prepare reports, including proper documentation of work orders, daily equipment logs, and manufacturer warranties.
  • Establish and maintain vehicle and equipment operating and maintenance records.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate subordinates; provide technical assistance for work problems.
  • Make recommendations for replacement items.
  • Mentor newly hired employees on heavy equipment maintenance, diagnostics, servicing, and repair.
  • Collaborate with the Branch Manager to optimize shop workflow and operational efficiency.
  • Educate technicians on safe work practices and proper PPE use for heavy equipment.
  • Partner with vendors and suppliers to manage and budget for equipment repairs.
  • Promote a safe, clean, and organized working environment for technicians and customers.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices to enhance shop operations.
  • Assist customers with questions and provide customer service as applicable.
  • Maintain a safe work environment.

Requirements

  • Over 5 years of experience in the heavy equipment industry or construction is preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to drive company vehicles per insurance requirements (may be required on a case-by-case basis).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, manufacturers, vendors, and subordinates.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and repair, including powertrain components (engines, transmissions, drivetrains).
  • Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge of heavy equipment, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Proficient in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical issues.
  • Ability to interpret safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to maintain records and inventories.
  • Ability to train and supervise subordinates.
  • Excellent customer service skills for both internal and external customers.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must have own tools.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
