About the Role

The Shop Foreman oversees daily operations in the service department, ensuring work orders and invoices are completed efficiently, warranty claims are prepared, and aged work-in-process is minimized. This role involves maintaining service records, assisting with diagnostics and repairs, and supporting team development through training and performance reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Complete work orders and invoices, including service data entry and timely closure to minimize aged work-in-process.
  • Prepare warranty claims and required reports, documenting causes of failure or problems.
  • Maintain service records, quality control records, and job status reports.
  • Perform basic diagnostics, determine necessary repairs, and advise customers on replacement parts.
  • Repair and replace damaged or worn parts, and test equipment post-repair for compliance and performance.
  • Utilize the Standard Pricing Guide (SPG) and Marketing Service Times (MSTs) to quote jobs and maintain flat-rate standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of company and competitor products, as well as tools, inventory, and shop conditions.
  • Assist in yearly performance reviews for Service Technicians and determine labor needs for workload preparation.
  • Support factory and engineers in diagnosing technical machine issues.
  • Maintain billing cycle efficiencies, expenses, and gross margins.
  • Assist employees in obtaining technician certification and completing training needs.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings and ensure a clean, orderly, and safe work environment.
  • Read and interpret operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including maintaining department communication and utilizing John Deere tools and computer programs.
  • Deliver parts, run errands, and assist with other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One-year certificate from a college or technical school or at least three years of related experience and/or training in a subordinate position.
  • Strong knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in repairing heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, evaluate options, and implement solutions.
  • Proficiency in operating diagnostic vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong customer service focus and attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and internet tools.
  • Basic familiarity with office machines (copier, fax, printer).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and meet commitments/deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills to manage multiple tasks under time constraints.
  • Openness to new procedures, technology, and structural changes.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
