The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division is seeking a compassionate and professional Shift Monitor to provide stability and safety to families residing at the Emergency Homeless Assessment and Referral Center.
About the Role
As a Shift Monitor, you will deliver consistent, professional service to clients, support the Program Director and Case Manager, and ensure the smooth operation of the center. This role involves direct client interaction, administrative duties, and maintaining a safe, supportive environment for homeless families.
Responsibilities
- Program/Administrative Duties:
- Perform front desk duties, including managing emails, mail, appointments, and phone calls.
- Facilitate guest placement, including orientation and room assignments.
- Notify Program Director and Case Managers of special mental health or dietary accommodations disclosed by guests.
- Conduct nightly bed checks and document guest presence.
- Prepare and distribute unusual incident or program violation reports as needed.
- Escalate program violations threatening life, health, or safety to the Program Director, Security, and emergency services (including contacting 911).
- Perform daily room checks, document findings, and notify housekeeping of new placements or departures.
- Oversee guest belongings stored on-site for five days; notify staff if unclaimed.
- Clean and prepare vacated rooms for new placements.
- Conduct daily facility checks and secure designated areas.
- Maintain confidentiality of guest information (verbal and written).
- Perform data entry and report writing for daily/monthly demographics and program statistics.
- Attend designated training during low enrollment periods.
- Assist in contacting referral shelters to check availability and make referrals when vacancies exist.
- Work with staff to relocate clients to appropriate housing within 10–12 days of enrollment.
- Client Interaction:
- Serve as meal monitor, encouraging guest compliance and attendance at meals.
- Prompt guests to adhere to program guidelines for conduct and service utilization.
- Perform safety checks of guest baggage/rooms to prevent concealment of prohibited items (e.g., alcohol, drugs, weapons, hazardous materials).
- Direct guests to address social service issues (e.g., mental health, financial, substance abuse) with the Program Director or Case Manager.
- Promote supervision of minor children; document and report non-compliance to staff.
- Store and distribute guest cigarettes/smoking paraphernalia; monitor compliance with no-smoking policies.
- Other Duties:
- Report maintenance requests to staff and document as required.
- Perform light housekeeping tasks (e.g., straightening rooms, vacuuming, trash/snow removal).
- Assist in coordinating efforts with other departments as assigned.
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Wear a Salvation Army uniform shirt during shifts; return upon termination/resignation.
- Complete all other assigned duties.
Requirements
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- 2 years of experience working with homeless families or individuals.
- Willingness to promote The Salvation Army’s mission.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of or aptitude to learn concepts related to serving low-income families.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Proficiency in handling confidential material.
- Attention to detail, procedures, and policies.
- Positive attitude and flexibility in changing job situations.
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform light physical work, including walking up three flights of stairs and lifting up to 35 pounds.
- Push/pull objects up to 50 pounds.
- Regular use of standard office equipment and PCs.
- Maintain a positive work environment through respectful communication and conflict resolution.
Pay
$17.60 per hour.
