Job Summary
The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a full-time Shelter Medical Veterinary Technician to join our team at the South Mountain Campus. This position is scheduled Thursday through Sunday from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with medical treatments, surgeries, diagnostics, radiology, dentistry, laboratory procedures, and client education
- Evaluate animals to help determine adoptability and appropriate care plans
- Administer treatments and vaccines
- Perform physical exams and diagnostic testing
- Assist with routine and orthopedic surgeries
- Maintain accurate medical records
- Prepare laboratory samples
- Ensure clinic cleanliness and organization
- Follow Fear Free handling techniques
- Support euthanasia procedures when necessary
- Train junior staff
- Create a safe, compassionate environment for both animals and clients
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED required
- Completion of a veterinary technician training program preferred
- Minimum 2 years experience at a veterinary hospital or clinic
- Must know phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, and pharmacology
- Proficiency with safe and humane animal handling skills, TPR, vaccines, medication administration, laboratory procedures, medical math, veterinary terminology, documentation, and medical records
- Ability to assist DVM with surgery, radiology, dentistry, diagnostics, patient care and recovery
- Ability to perform advanced technical procedures such as surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring and support, advanced wound care, bandaging and splinting, dental cleanings and procedures, advanced fluid therapy, and sampling techniques
- Strong competency in emergency response and critical care support
- Able to speak, read and write English; Spanish language helpful
- Able to perform medical mathematical equations
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, and reach with hands and arms
- Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, feel, restrain, or operate medical equipment, instruments, and animals
- Effective communication, including talking, hearing, and observing animal behavior and medical conditions
- Safety handling and restraining animals, with or without assistance, and occasional lifting and moving of animals, equipment, or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
- Exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander
- Most time spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment
