Shelter Health Manager

About the role

The Lynchburg Humane Society is looking for a Shelter Health Manager to lead our Medical Department and help keep the animals in our care healthy, safe, and moving toward their next chapter. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys both medicine and managing people. You’ll supervise and develop medical staff, manage daily workflow and inventory, work closely with veterinarians, and provide hands-on patient care. Full-time position located in Lynchburg, VA.

Responsibilities

• Lead, train, supervise, and support the Medical Department team
• Manage schedules, workflow, supplies, medications, and inventory
• Provide hands-on patient care and support veterinary treatment plans
• Monitor shelter animal health, vaccinations, disease control, and medical records
• Work with veterinarians, foster, adoption, behavior, pet care, and animal control teams
• Maintain medical protocols, equipment, and regulatory compliance
• Help create a positive, organized, and supportive work environment

Requirements

• Veterinary or shelter medicine experience
• Experience managing staff and daily operations
• Strong veterinary technical skills, including medication administration, surgical prep/recovery, triage, blood draws, wound care, and emergency response
• Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills
• Experience with fear-free/low-stress handling
• Ability to work in a busy, fast-changing environment
