About the role
As a Shelter Assistant with Catholic Charities of Cleveland, you will provide a vital role to support the shelter residents by maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Absorb and implement program objectives.
- Ensure the site programs operate smoothly in alignment with the mission.
- Oversee daily operations of the shelter or cafeteria.
- Serve and guide shelter clients.
- Transport clients to appointments and activities as needed.
- Initiate daily activities like showers, laundry, and remind clients of case management and educational programming.
- Handle medical emergencies and notify appropriate staff.
- Supervise clients and volunteers in managing client self-administration of medication.
- Manage client planned activities on shift.
- Inspect clients at shelter check-in and administer breath screens as appropriate.
- Handle referrals from case management and assist clients with housing and basic needs.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the cafeteria and restrooms.
- Enter data into Penelope or Avatar and pick up donations.
- Develop and share additional resources to better serve clients.
- Post announcements as needed.
- Model positive behavior through professionalism, communication, work ethic, and interaction with clients.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent with plus college coursework and/or technical experience or 1 year of related experience required.
- At least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License, provided with a copy of the driver’s license, and subject to an annual Moving Vehicle Report (MVR) check through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Good working and therapeutic relationships with clients.
- Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledgeable in Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
- Experience with Avatar or case management software preferred.
- Experience working with a team of professional staff desirable.
- Flexible and willing to assist program implementation (including shift coverage).
- Fingerprinting required for background check.
