About the Role
The Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I fabricates, installs, and maintains sheet-metal equipment and fixtures such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, and metal roofing. Work involves planning and laying out sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications; setting up and operating sheet-metal working machines; and using hand tools to cut, bend, form, shape, fit, assemble, and install sheet-metal articles.
Responsibilities
- Read and analyze work requests, applicable specifications, and similar work data
- Develop and draw working sketches showing views, sections, or profiles
- Manufacture and fabricate aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, and similar articles from various serviced aircraft, including fuselage, door assemblies, windshield panel angles, washers, firewalls, and straight brackets
- Work with various types of metal and materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, corrugated aluminum, titanium, iron, brass, copper, magnesium, rubber, plastic, plexiglass, fiberglass, and others
- Determine type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material, and repair methods to use
- Lay out, cut, form, join, assemble, and install items
- Develop parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available
- Plan, lay out, cut, form, shape, and assemble complex sheet metal items
- Use developed patterns/layouts, prefabricated templates, or old parts as samples; scribe outlines on sheet metal and cut out scribed parts using shears, Do-All saw, and turret punch
- Form metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools
- Finish and smooth edges of metal sheet after cutting; assemble component sheet metal pieces with rivets, screws, nuts, and bolts
- Align, drill, and ream material for installation of various types of riveting, taking precautions to protect dissimilar metals
- Apply necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, and similar materials
- Independently lay out templates, transcribe information from templates, and manufacture double contour parts with configuration in several planes
- Assemble and fasten fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws, and/or seaming
- Ensure finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, and appearance in accordance with specifications
- Work inside fuel tanks (e.g., CH 47) or other confined spaces as required
- Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment, including checking protective devices for proper operation
- Maintain a safe, clean work environment
- Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required
- May be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks
