About the role

The Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I, maintenance fabricates, installs and maintains in good repair the sheet-metal equipment and fixtures (such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, metal roofing) of an establishment. Work involves most of the following:

Responsibilities

• Planning and laying out all types of sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications.
• Setting up and operating all available types of sheet-metal working machines.
• Using a variety of hand tools in cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting and assembling.
• Installing sheet-metal articles as required.
• Read and analyzes work requests and applicable specifications or similar work data.
• Developing and drawing working sketches showing views, sections, or profiles.
• Manufacturing and fabricating aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft.
• Determining type and extent of repair or replacement required, type of material and repair methods to use.
• Laying out, cutting forms, joining, assembling and installing items.
• Developing parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available.
• Plans, lays out, cuts, forms, shapes and assembles complex sheet metal items.
• Scribes outlines on sheet metal and cuts out scribed parts using shears, Do-All saw and turret punch.
• Forms metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar metal forming tools.
• Finishes and smooths edges of metal sheet after cutting and assembles component sheet metal pieces with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts.
• Aligns, drills and reams material for installation of various types of riveting and takes precautions to protect dissimilar metals.
• Applies necessary protective compounds, special insulating protective tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc.
• Independently lays out template, transcribes information from template and manufactures double contour parts with configuration in several planes.
• Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws and/or seaming.
• Ensures finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, appearance in accordance with specification and/or similar requirements.
• May be required to work inside fuel tanks (e.g., UH 60) or other confined spaces.
• Follows all safety procedures and uses appropriate personal protective equipment to include checking protective devices for proper operation and maintains a safe clean work environment.

Requirements

• Valid up-to-date A&P license.
• If no A&P license, three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, two (2) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two (2) years on the assigned (MDS) UH-60.
• Two (2) or more years actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft.
• Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts.
• Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
• Basic knowledge of electrical theory and a thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers.
• Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
• Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects and may be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks.
• Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
• Possess the level of experience to inspect all required aeronautical type maintenance to be performed by Mechanics.

Qualifications

• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
• Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
• May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
• Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.
• May work in maintenance shop or outside.
• Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
• May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
• May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.
• May be expected to work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.
