Aircraft Mechanic I - Sheetmetal

Aircraft Sheetmetal Mechanic I fabricates, installs, and maintains sheet-metal equipment and fixtures such as machine guards, grease pans, shelves, lockers, tanks, ventilators, chutes, ducts, and metal roofing.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lay out sheet-metal maintenance work from blueprints, models, or other specifications.
• Set up and operate sheet-metal working machines and use hand tools for cutting, bending, forming, shaping, fitting, and assembling.
• Read and analyze work requests and applicable specifications.
• Develop and draw working sketches showing views, sections, or profiles.
• Manufacture and fabricate aircraft sheet metal parts, panels, doors, etc., from various serviced aircraft, including fuselage, door assemblies, windshield panel angles, washers, firewalls, and straight brackets.
• Work with various metals such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, corrugated aluminum, titanium, iron, brass, copper, magnesium, rubber, plastic, plexiglass, and fiberglass.
• Determine type and extent of repair or replacement required, including material and repair methods.
• Lay out, cut, form, join, assemble, and install sheet metal items.
• Develop parts and templates from prints, drawings, or original parts to produce repair parts that are not readily available.
• Use developed patterns, prefabricated templates, or old parts as samples to scribe outlines on sheet metal and cut out parts using shears, Do-All saw, and turret punch.
• Form metal using cornice brake, punch press, drill press, and similar tools.
• Finish and smooth edges of metal sheets and assemble components with rivets, screws, nuts, and bolts.
• Align, drill, and ream material for installation of various types of riveting, taking precautions to protect dissimilar metals.
• Apply protective compounds, insulating tape, plastic cement, fiberglass resins, etc.
• Lay out templates, transcribe information, and manufacture double contour parts with configurations in several planes.
• Assemble and fasten fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws, and/or seaming.
• Ensure finished aircraft parts meet quality standards for soundness, strength, and appearance.
• Work inside fuel tanks or other confined spaces as required.
• Follow all safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Participate in maintenance test flights and operation checks as required.
• Inspect aeronautical type maintenance performed by mechanics.
• Make entries in aircraft logs and records.

Requirements

• Valid up-to-date A&P license or three (3) years aviation maintenance experience, two (2) years rotary wing aircraft experience, and two (2) years on the assigned MDS (Sheetmetal). All experience must be within the six (6) most recent years.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (US Citizenship required).
• Must possess own shadowed/etched tools and toolbox.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) or more years of actual and recent experience in the repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of aircraft.

Skills

• Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures, and replacement of parts.
• Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
• Basic knowledge of electrical theory and aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears.
• Working knowledge of technical publications and Logistics Information Systems.
• Able to prioritize workloads to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
• May be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft-relevant tasks.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

• Walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods.
• Climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
• Crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee, and reach above/below shoulders.
• Lift heavy objects exceeding 50 pounds.
• Type using a standard keyboard to communicate through email and software applications.
• Handle dirty parts and lubricants.
• Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.
• Operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklift, etc.
• Work in maintenance shops or outside in drafty, noisy, and dirty environments.
• Exposure to extreme noise, electrical shock hazards, or moving mechanical parts/vehicles.
• Work in austere environments and all-weather conditions.

Pay

$35.33 per hour. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and relevant laws.
