SFO- Water Service Inspector

About the role

This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate and be successful in a Civil Service Examination process for this classification and be selected through an open competitive process in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, install, remove, replace, and verify the operation of water meters, services, backflow devices, and related equipment.
• Perform flow and pressure tests and inspect meter boxes, service connections, fittings, and fire hydrants for damage, improper use, or needed repairs.
• Investigate water service complaints and unusual water use, including low pressure, leaks, dirty water, unusual noises, tastes and odors, and high bills.
• Identify causes and recommend or coordinate corrective actions.
• Read water meters, calculate water consumption, inspect properties for leaks or faulty plumbing, and turn water services on or off for new, changed, or discontinued accounts.
• Review construction plans and inspect new or modified water services to verify proper meter sizing, service locations, taps, connections, and installation.
• Support the Cross-Connection Control Program by inspecting and testing backflow prevention devices, ensuring required annual testing is completed, and coordinating inspections and surveys with San Mateo County.
• Monitor construction and street work involving water services; coordinate temporary water service; verify water use and charges; and investigate unauthorized use of water from fire hydrants and water service connections.
• Take appropriate action to address violations.
• Conduct water conservation inspections and recommend ways to improve water efficiency and reduce water consumption.
• Collect water quality samples and support the Airport's water quality monitoring program and compliance with state drinking water regulations.
• Respond to emergency water service issues and coordinate with maintenance staff, contractors, plumbers, tenants, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to restore service and resolve problems.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records of inspections, meter readings, water usage, service changes, repairs, sampling results, and regulatory compliance activities.
• Explain water service requirements, water use regulations, and compliance procedures to tenants, contractors, consultants, and other customers.
• Perform other functions outlined in the 7316 Water Service Classification.

  Requirements

  Two (2) years of experience in a water or wastewater agency performing various phases of field and distribution operations including: water sample collection and field analysis, water service inspection and repair, meter readings, investigation of customer complaints, investigation of customer accounts or investigation and enforcement of efficiency codes and standards.

  Qualifications

  Possession of a valid California driver's license. Required Special Condition: Some positions may require additional qualifications such as special conditions that may differ from the standard minimum qualifications associated with this classification.
