SFGATE Community Engagement Program Manager

San Francisco Chronicle · San Francisco, CA · 2 mo ago
HybridOTHR$80k–$85k/yrFull-time

Under the direction of SFGATE's Editor-in-Chief, the Community Engagement Program Manager will own growth, retention, and engagement across SFGATE's community and membership programs, with the app and Friends of SFGATE as a central focus. In this dynamic role, you will build the daily habits, live experiences, and surprise-and-delight moments that turn casual readers into members—and members into superfans. This person will sit at the intersection of editorial, product, membership, and events, and will be the newsroom's go-to advocate for how SFGATE builds community wherever it shows up—in the app, at live events, and everywhere in between.

About SFGATE

Launched in 1994, SFGATE.com was one of the first large-market media sites in the world and served as the exclusive digital home of the San Francisco Chronicle for 19 years. In 2019, the Chronicle (now found online at the paywalled sfchronicle.com) and SFGATE officially became two separately run entities with their own editorial staffs and independent newsrooms. Today, SFGATE is a digital-only publication that reaches more than 28 million readers every month and tells the stories of the people, places, and ideas that make San Francisco, and the Bay Area at large, the weird and wonderful place that it is.

We help readers navigate their day, whether it's by keeping them updated on big breaking news, guiding them to interesting local experiences, or sharing a part of the Bay Area they haven't seen before. The site is home to nine verticals: Culture, Local, Sports, Tech, Travel, Politics, Food + Drink, Cannabis, and News. Additionally, SFGATE has full-time local editors covering Lake Tahoe, the Central Coast, a SoCal bureau focusing on Los Angeles food, culture, and the outdoors (including Disneyland), a National Parks bureau covering parks across the West Coast, and satellite editors covering Hawaii and California's North Coast.

Responsibilities

  • Drive growth and retention for SFGATE's app and Friends of SFGATE membership, and for community engagement more broadly
  • Plan and produce live events and experiences that build membership and deepen brand affinity
  • Test and launch new engagement tools and exclusive content across platforms
  • Oversee production schedules for app features such as maps and games, and work with outside partners on new offerings
  • Track engagement and growth metrics, translating what you learn into action across teams

Qualifications

  • You've grown something—an audience, a subscriber base, a community, a following—in media, product, membership, events, or elsewhere entirely
  • A self-starter who's organized, self-guided, and thrives juggling several things at once
  • Exceptionally creative and entrepreneurial: you see opportunities others miss and love building new things from scratch
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative, service-minded approach to working with newsrooms
  • You've read SFGATE and follow us on social media to have an understanding of our brand and voice

Pay

In accordance with applicable law, the reasonable estimate of compensation for this role if hired in California is between $80,000 and $85,000. A final decision on the successful candidate's starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
