Course: RLG373H1F: Buddhist Ritual
This course introduces and analyzes various forms of Buddhist ritual, including daily worship, the alms round, life-crisis celebrations, healing rituals, meditation, festivals, pilgrimage, the consecration of artefacts, and ancestor care. The course uses liturgical manuals, ethnographic descriptions, and audiovisual records to discuss the role of ritual as both text and event.

Class schedule: Wednesday 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM (In-Person)
Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026
Responsibilities
- Develop a detailed syllabus and curriculum for the course
- Present weekly lectures and classes
- Evaluate student performance through grading papers and exams
- Hold office hours and meet with students as requested
- Handle other pedagogical and administrative tasks ordinarily associated with an undergraduate course
Requirements
- PhD in Religion or a related field
- Ability to address the themes of the course to which the application is being made
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated teaching experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor in Buddhism
- Extensive knowledge of the subject area, with particular focus on ritual and material studies
Pay
- Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
- Sessional Lecturer I Long-Term: $10,510.04
- Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
- Sessional Lecturer II Long-Term: $10,760.28
- Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
- Sessional Lecturer III Long-Term: $11,030.36
Please note that should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.
