About the role

Course: POL479H1 S, LEC5101 – Topics in Middle East Politics (State Formation and Authoritarianism in the MENA Region)

The course examines the history and contemporary politics of the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). Themes examined include: states and state formation in historical perspective, the challenges of post-colonial development, the dynamics of protest in the MENA region, and the resilience of authoritarianism. The course integrates theoretical discussion with comparative case study analysis.

Estimated course enrollment: 30
Class schedule: Wednesday 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Delivery method: In-person (subject to change as determined by the Faculty or Department)

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of course syllabus and course marking scheme
  • Planning and teaching weekly lectures
  • Setting and marking assignments/tests/exams and course administration in accordance with University regulations
  • Submission of grades
  • Available for office hours for academic counselling of students
  • Dealing with student enquiries, appeals, and petitions
  • Supervising and training TAs

Requirements

  • PhD is required
  • Teaching experience at the university level is required

Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching and mastery of the subject area
  • Previous experience in teaching a similar course

Pay

Salary (includes Vacation Pay):

  • Sessional Lecturers I - $9,997.48
  • Sessional Lecturers I (Long Term) - $10,699.22
  • Sessional Lecturers II - $10,699.22
  • Sessional Lecturers II (Long Term) - $10,953.96
  • Sessional Lecturers III - $10,953.96
  • Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) - $11,228.90

Note: Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Schedule

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 – April 30, 2027
