Serve on a Research Team
About the Role
Join a CII Research Team as an Industry Member to contribute to groundbreaking research that shapes capital projects. Research Teams are formed annually, with topics introduced around February and nominations accepted until late April. To receive nomination requests, ensure you have an active CII account. The CII Board of Advisors and Alternates also receive these requests during the CII Spring Board of Advisors Meeting.
As a Research Team Member, you will influence capital projects by identifying research areas, improving processes, and developing new practices. Past research, such as the Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) and Advanced Work Packaging (AWP), has significantly improved project delivery.
Benefits
- Collaborate with peers and academics to build a diverse professional network and form lasting connections.
- Gain early access to industry knowledge and become an expert in emerging areas and tools.
- Enhance leadership, presentation, and communication skills through unique team opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Participate in Research Team activities for one to two years, with a mix of online and face-to-face meetings (approximately three or four per year).
- Dedicate an average of 3 to 10 hours per month, with higher time commitments during months with face-to-face meetings (8 hours plus travel time) and lower commitments during online call months (1-hour call plus small tasks or data collection).
Requirements
- Volunteer nominations must be vetted by your organization’s CII Board member.
- CII assesses nominations to maximize team diversity in backgrounds, organization types (owners, contractors, service providers, suppliers), and industry sector representation.
Academic Opportunities
CII selects Principal Investigators (PIs) for overarching research through Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs), typically sent out once a year. RFQs focus on the PI’s qualifications and do not require a proposal. To qualify, academics must hold a terminal degree and have a full-time tenure-track appointment at an accredited university. Academics in the U.S. or Canada can join CII’s distribution list by filling out an online form.
