Job Qualifications
Education: Must possess a High school diploma, Associate’s degree, or considerable college coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related field desirable.
Certification or Licensure: Must be certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) as a Police Officer and possess a valid state driver's License or equivalent. First aid and CPR certification or willingness to acquire within a specified time.
Skills: Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
Work Experience: At least three years as a School Resource Officer (SRO) or a minimum of three years’ experience as a corporal or above in a municipality. Must not have been convicted of a felony or some other crime involving moral turpitude.
Primary Duty
This position is responsible for serving in a supervisor capacity and having direct supervision over a specific school zone.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Inform the Captain and Lieutenant of any changes in the status of his/her officers including absences (authorized and unauthorized), injuries, accidents involving personnel, equipment malfunctions/repairs needed, any incident which potentially could bring adverse public reaction to or discredit the Board of Education.
- Provide advice to and answer questions posed by administrators and faculty regarding safety and security matters, such as traffic flow, emergency preparedness, and evacuation procedures.
- Provide training to faculty, administrators, and parent groups regarding safety issues: such as personal safety, gun safety, and gang awareness.
- Participate in security surveys and safety drills, such as fire and lockdown drills.
- Schedule and supervise security for extracurricular events as needed.
- Act as liaisons between the School District and law enforcement agencies, such as the Department of Family and Children Services and local police departments.
- Act as the primary backup to officers. Take and complete assignments when officers are engaged in other activities.
- Advise and assist officers in all phases of police work requiring his expertise.
- Review all reports generated by officers for accuracy, completeness, and conformity to reporting procedures.
- Keep shift members updated on changes both in law and in operational policies.
- Act as a prosecutor in Tribunal cases, as needed.
- Respond to school when a report of terroristic events occurs.
- Sort and deliver truancy and tribunal paperwork as needed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must have sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons;
- Stamina to spend long periods walking and standing and to complete security patrol duties.
- Ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
