Sergeant

Grade 9 – Regular, full-time position (40 hours per week). Schedule will be based on operational needs.

About the Role

Reporting to the Public Safety Lieutenant and Senior Sergeant, the Sergeant may be assigned to either the Morningside, Manhattanville, or CUIMC campus depending on operational needs of the department. This role supervises uniformed Public Safety personnel and contract guard staff whose duties include access control, foot and mobile patrol, fixed indoor and outdoor posts, and order maintenance at special events.

Responsibilities

• Perform patrol duty on foot, in an automobile, or on bicycle; may be required to pass a physical fitness job standards test.
• Handle response to emergency situations across campus using a computer-aided dispatch platform and direct activities of responding Public Safety Officers.
• Determine when additional resources are needed and coordinate response with other departments.
• Coordinate activities via a computer-aided dispatch system; when assigned as desk officer in the Operations Center, maintain and operate complex computers and alarm systems, serve as radio dispatcher, and handle walk-in requests for assistance or information.
• Demonstrate leadership under stressful conditions, including training security staff to respond to security, medical, and fire emergencies and initiating appropriate response procedures.
• Prepare reports, review subordinates' reports, maintain logs and records, patrol, staff the Operations Desk, and prepare performance evaluations.
• Maintain and safeguard equipment essential to department operations, including use of computer keyboards and other electronic equipment.
• Communicate effectively and clearly with staff and visitors in a professional manner, demonstrating high ethics and professional appearance.
• Serve as Essential Personnel, working day (8 am–4 pm), evening (4 pm–Midnight), overnight (Midnight–8 am), holidays, weekends, nights, and double shifts as required by department needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of two years of related work experience in law enforcement, military, or security.
• Valid Driver’s License and NYS Guard License.
• NYS Department of State’s 8-hour mandated certificate of training (completed annually through Public Safety training team).
• Excellent oral/written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to review incident facts and prepare clear, concise written reports.
• Proficiency in using multiple proprietary computer applications simultaneously.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid NYS Guard’s license.
• Capability to engage in strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, and standing or sitting for long periods.
• Willingness to perform duty in inclement weather conditions.
• Valid driver’s license from the state of legal residence.

Preferred Qualifications

• Supervisory experience.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Educational accomplishments beyond high school.
• Working knowledge of computer-aided dispatch systems.

Pay

$73,476.51. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
