About the role
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Sr. Principal Structural Engineer. This position will be located in Roy, UT and will support the Sentinel program. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
Responsibilities
- Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs.
- Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling.
- Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.
- Utilizes tools such as CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
- Performs bolted joint analyses per NASA STD 5020.
- Runs static and dynamic structural problems using analytical methods (hand calculations, in-house tools, and 3rd party commercial analytical tools).
- Performs thermal analysis of aerospace systems.
- Uses MATLAB (or equivalent) for analysis and data manipulation.
- Engages in seismic analysis (ASCE 7).
- Works on strategic or tactical missile programs or spacecraft.
- Utilizes ABAQUS, FEMAP, and ANSYS.
- Participates in structural test applications.
- Has experience with TeamCenter CPLM.
- Exhibits proficiency in programming and use of MATLAB (or equivalent) for analysis and data manipulation.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Science or STEM with 8 years of experience; or Master's degree with 6 years of experience; or PhD with 4 years of experience.
- Must be a US Citizen with an active DoD Secret Clearance with investigation date within 5 years.
- U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with adjacent disciplines (e.g. systems engineering, aerodynamics, stress analysis, design, test) in a highly integrated team environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated technical writing experience in both authoring and reviewing formal analysis documentation.
- Knowledge and/or experience with structural analysis.
- Experience using CAD software to clean up geometry for analysis.
- Experience in Finite Element Analysis with Nastran (or equivalent).
- Experience in performing Bolted Joint Analyses per NASA STD 5020.
- Experience running static and dynamic structural problems using analytical methods (hand calculations, in-house tools, and 3rd party commercial analytical tools).
- Basic knowledge of Heat Transfer methods and principles.
- Proficient in programming and use of MATLAB (or equivalent) for analysis and data manipulation.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent from an accredited college/university.
- Experience working strategic or tactical missile programs or spacecraft.
- Experience with Thermal Desktop.
- DoD Top Secret Clearance.
- Proficiency with ABAQUS, FEMAP, and ANSYS.
- Exposure to structural test applications.
- Exposure to missiles program requirements & with propulsion.
- TeamCenter CPLM experience.
- Existing Special Access Program (SAP) approval.

Pay
The standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
