Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Technician performs troubleshooting and repairs on circuit cards, modules, and assemblies used in U.S. Navy Navigation systems. This person plays a critical role in keeping high-value electronic systems operational by diagnosing and repairing inertial systems such as: Fathometers, Depth Detectors, Dead Reckoning Indicators, Electromagnetic Logs, NAVAIDs (Synchro Amplifiers, Binoculars, Compasses), Digital and Analog Repeaters – Panel and Pelorus support.

Job Responsibilities Include

  • Perform troubleshooting and corrective maintenance on legacy inertial navigation systems and support equipment onboard Navy ships to include submarines.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electronic components in accordance with NAVSEA and DoD technical manuals.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking for troubleshooting complex issues.
  • Communication and teamwork skills for coordinating with engineers and customers.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma or GED. Formal electronics training from: Technical School, or Class A or B military school in electronics or communications, or four (4) year electronics apprentice program. Formal electronics training, to include: Installation Tasks, Soldering, Cable Dressing, Cable Tray, Conduit, and Making/Repairing Connectors.
  • Sensor Technician I - Two years of practical experience, to include: electronics repair, maintenance and checkout.
  • Sensor Technician II - Two years of practical experience, to include: electronics repair, maintenance and checkout. Must demonstrate at least one year of practical experience in electronics installation.
  • Sensor Technician III - Six years of practical experience, to include: Electronics Repair, Maintenance, Installation and Checkout. One (1) year of experience, to include: supervision, and shop practices. Two years of practical experience, to include: electronics repair and installation. Experience may be achieved simultaneously. Four years of experience working with US Navy Navigation Systems.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position operates in standard Office, Assembly Laboratory, and Aboard Vessel/Shipyard environments. Standard offices and laboratories: Sitting, standing, extended periods of time using a mouse and keyboard and viewing computer screens. Movement between points within the same office or between buildings. Work is performed in generally consistent environmental conditions with some seasonality for temperature differences and lighting. In shipyards and aboard vessels: Significant use of hands to operate equipment and tools. Significant lifting of 40 lbs. Sitting, stooping, bending, twisting, reaching, lying prone, and squatting on a daily basis. Work is performed in highly variable work conditions to include seasonable variations in weather and temperature. High probability of working in confined spaces where movement is restricted. Dust, noise and constant activity associated with the movements of materials and people, and the fabrication of steel, including welding and the use of overhead cranes/hoists. Personal Protective Equipment: safety shoes and hard hat required; hearing protection and safety glasses recommended.
