About the Role
One of the country's leading business media brands is hiring a Senior Writer to join its Design editorial team, covering the advertising and marketing industry. The publication focuses on original, distinctive coverage exploring how innovation is reshaping the business of reaching customers, culture, and society, rather than chasing every industry headline. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with deep knowledge of the advertising and agency world, strong industry relationships, and the editorial judgment to separate hype from substance. This is an opportunity to help shape the voice of the publication's Design section and work closely on its long-running brand recognition program. The position is covered by the Writers Guild of America East collective bargaining agreement.
Responsibilities
- Sourcing and writing deeply reported, ambitious features with exclusive information about the intersection of innovation, advertising, and marketing
- Adding smart, quick-turn analysis to breaking news based on reporting and sources
- Appearing on the publication's podcasts and video discussing stories and trends in the field
- Collaborating with editors and colleagues to share leads, shape coverage, and identify high-impact stories that drive premium subscriptions
- Contributing to the print magazine, franchises, and recognition programs
- Representing the publication at live events, media appearances, and on podcasts or video
Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in daily journalism, preferably covering design, advertising, or media for a news publication
- An enterprising reporter with genuine fascination for advertising and how creativity fuels innovation
- Ability to generate original story ideas based on primary reporting and active source-building
- A strong existing source list and track record of uncovering new information
- Established relationships within the advertising sector, particularly with founders, agency executives, CMOs, and other key industry figures
- Superior writing and reporting skills with the ability to conceive imaginative stories and find fresh angles
- Excellent news judgment and ability to distill complex topics into accessible, engaging narratives
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no visa sponsorship available)
Pay
$89,000 - $120,000/yr + Bonus
