Senior Wireless Systems Specialist (Radio)

Join the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Wireless Communications Section as a senior wireless systems specialist in Bend. You’ll lead complex projects, maintain critical radio infrastructure, and support the statewide Public Safety Wireless system that keeps Oregon connected.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and resolve user problems on the statewide Public Safety Wireless system, including voice and data radio, microwave systems, and multi-agency dispatch consoles.
• Troubleshoot major system failures and coordinate with Wireless, IS, and Dispatch Center staff to restore communications for OSP, ODOT, and other government organizations.
• Lead and assist in identifying, isolating, and repairing complex or large-scale statewide systems issues.
• Support Public Safety Radio System customers and dispatch centers with mobile and portable radio repairs, programming, and assistance.
• Mentor and assist other Wireless Technicians.
• Research and plan large or unusual projects involving new technology, multiple vendors, jurisdictions, and cross-agency cooperation.
• Use soldering equipment to remove and replace defective circuit board components or modules.
• Install, test, replace, or repair various cable types, including control cables, DC power distribution, multi-coupler, and waveguide systems.
• Plan equipment implementation schedules, ensure compliance with specifications, and direct installation teams.
• Operate a Sno-Cat or UTV in inclement weather or rough conditions to access remote locations for repairs or emergency restoration.
• Climb and work on towers and antenna structures up to 180 feet above ground, including handling high voltages.
• Travel region-wide or statewide in all weather conditions and times of day.
• Move or lift objects exceeding 70 pounds following safety procedures.

Requirements

• Five years of information systems experience in wireless systems (e.g., two-way radio, microwave); OR
• An associate’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or completion of a two-year accredited vocational training program in information technology or a related field, AND three years of information systems experience in wireless systems; OR
• A bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field AND one year of information systems experience in wireless systems.
• Maximum 60-minute response time to 63055 N Highway 97, Bend, OR 97701 for emergency call-outs.
• Valid US driver’s license and acceptable driving record (pre-employment driving record check required).

Preferred Qualifications

• Journeyman-level experience in Land Mobile Radio systems (VHF/UHF repeaters, Analog/Digital/P25 radio, 700/800 MHz Trunked Radio), Terrestrial Microwave Systems, and AC/DC power systems.
• Experience with analog and IP Radio Dispatch Console Systems.
• Proficiency with radio propagation software.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including handling difficult customers.
• Computer literacy and willingness to learn new technologies.
• Familiarity with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations for public service radio.
