Senior Wireless Systems Specialist (Radio)

About the Role

Join our Wireless Communications Section as a senior wireless systems specialist in Bend! In this role, you’ll be at the heart of Oregon’s critical radio communications infrastructure—helping operate, maintain, and support the systems that keep our state connected. You’ll take the lead on complex team projects, collaborate with skilled professionals, and see your work through to successful completion. This is a journey-level assignment in a supportive, high-performing environment for someone eager to grow, contribute, and serve radio system users across the state.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose user problems and questions; address complex issues on the mission-critical statewide Public Safety Wireless system—the State’s primary wireless communication medium used in critical situations.
• Troubleshoot major system failures of the statewide voice and data radio, microwave systems, and multi-agency dispatch console; collaborate with other Wireless, IS, and Dispatch Center staff to resolve problems.
• Lead, assist, and coordinate with other Wireless staff to identify, isolate, and repair complex or large statewide systems problems, restoring OSP, ODOT, and other governmental organizations’ Public Safety communications equipment.
• Support the state’s Public Safety Radio System customers and dispatch centers with mobile and portable radio repairs, programming, and assistance.
• Mentor and assist other Wireless Technicians.
• Conduct research for large or unusual projects, including those introducing new technology or business processes; build implementation plans and recommendations involving multiple vendors, jurisdictions, and cross-agency cooperation.
• Use various types of soldering equipment to remove and replace defective circuit board components or individual modules.
• Install, test, replace, or repair a variety of cable types used to support, connect, or install wireless equipment, including control cables, DC power distribution, multi-coupler, and waveguide systems.
• Plan equipment implementation schedules and documentation; ensure equipment configuration and compliance with specifications; assemble and direct installation team(s); complete system documentation and distribute as appropriate.
• Operate a Sno-Cat or UTV (utility task vehicle) in inclement weather or rough conditions to access remote locations for repairs, installations, or emergency restoration of equipment or systems.
• Climb and work on towers and antenna structures up to 180 feet above ground; work with high voltages.
• Travel region-wide or statewide in all weather conditions and times of day.
• Move or lift heavy objects exceeding 70 pounds following safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Five years of information systems experience in wireless systems (e.g., two-way radio, microwave); OR
• An associate’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or completion of a two-year accredited vocational training program in information technology or a related field; AND three years of information systems experience in wireless systems (e.g., two-way radio, microwave); OR
• A bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field AND one year of information systems experience in wireless systems (e.g., two-way radio, microwave).

Special Qualifications

• This position requires a maximum 60-minute response time to 63055 N Highway 97, Bend, OR 97701 for emergency call-outs.
• Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Pre-employment driving record checks will be conducted on final candidate(s).

Skills

We’d like to see the following attributes in your application materials:

• Journeyman-level experience in Land Mobile Radio systems (VHF and UHF repeaters, Analog, Digital, and P25 radio, 700/800 MHz Trunked Radio), Terrestrial Microwave Systems, AC and DC power systems.
• Experience with analog and IP Radio Dispatch Console Systems.
• Proficiency with radio propagation software.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to deal with difficult customers.
• Computer literacy and competency; willingness to learn new technologies.
• Familiarity with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations pertaining to public service radio.

Pay

Monthly salary range: $6,182 – $9,361 (non-PERS).
