Description Of Duties/Essential Functions

Performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair duties for water systems and facilities.
Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, installations, lubrications, and repairs on rotating equipment, piping, pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, valves, lines, water systems, facilities, and equipment.
Maintains and repairs equipment, and tools used to perform responsibilities.
Collections and catalogs data on installed equipment.
Makes service calls to maintain and repair equipment and install equipment identification tags.
Reports unsafe conditions and equipment to proper authorities.
Keeps records of service calls, maintenance and repair work.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward position for long periods of time.

Minimum Requirements

• Educational Requirements: Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and mathematical functions as might be acquired through specialized training up to nine months education or training beyond the high school level. Requires simple vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.
• Experience Requirements: Three (3) years of building or mechanical maintenance are required or one (1) year as an operator trainee and two years in building or mechanical maintenance. One year directly related college or vocational education may be substituted for up to one year of work experience.
• Licenses Required: A valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Preference will also be given to candidates with training and experience in the corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to equipment such as centrifugal pump maintenance, motors, air compressors, piping, blowers, valves and hydraulic equipment. Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification. Pay Grade 16
