Senior Utility Mechanic (Wastewater Operations)

Service Line/Section: Houston Water/Wastewater Operations (GNEHSA)

Schedule

• Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (subject to change)

Responsibilities

• Performs skilled repair and mechanical duties in the maintenance of wastewater systems and facilities.
• Performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of building lift stations and treatment plants.
• Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrications, and repairs on various facilities and equipment.
• Maintains records of time, cost, and personnel; ensures necessary parts and equipment are available.
• Reports unsafe conditions and makes repair recommendations.
• Coordinates and performs shop work and supervises the maintenance of shop equipment.
• May train and assign duties to plant personnel.

Working Conditions

This position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis, and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier 1 Level.

Requirements

• Three years of building or mechanical maintenance experience, or one year as an operator trainee and two years in building or mechanical maintenance.
• Substitution: One year of directly related college or vocational education may substitute for up to one year of work experience.
• Valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy (AP 2-2).

Qualifications

Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mathematical functions as might be acquired through specialized training of up to nine months beyond high school. May require simple vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.

Preferences

• Training and experience in corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to equipment such as chemical feed systems, flow metering equipment, PVC plumbing and design, low-voltage electrical knowledge, calibration of analyzers, leak detection systems, and flow meters.
• Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of duties, provided they are among the most qualified candidates.

Pay

Pay Grade 16. Factors used in determining the salary include the candidate’s qualifications and the pay rates of other employees in this classification.

This position is subject to random drug testing and, if promotional, requires passing an assignment drug test.
