Senior Underwriter - Middle Market Construction

About the role

Join our thriving Construction team as a specialty construction casualty Senior Underwriter to drive profitable growth in the Southeast region. Our team specializes in construction and risk management, handling Middle Market to National Account-sized casualty construction business. This field-based position works closely with agency and broker partners, focusing on primary casualty lines of coverage while fostering underwriter judgment and local decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Risk Selection: Review, rate, underwrite, evaluate, and assess insurance applications by qualifying accounts, identifying and selecting risks, determining premiums and policy terms, obtaining approvals, creating and presenting proposals, and negotiating deals.
  • Agent/Broker Relationships: Demonstrate high responsiveness and support for Key Agents and Brokers. Establish, develop, and maintain relationships to facilitate product marketing through responsive service, site visits, in-person renewal meetings, and deepening knowledge of their customers' businesses. Build a strong personal brand to create a long-term, quality pipeline.
  • Portfolio Management: Manage a sizable and complex book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying growth and profit opportunities, and executing marketing plans to increase market share. Make marketing calls to preferred brokers to promote and cross-market products.
  • Documenting the Deal: Document files to reflect a solid thought process and decision-making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs, and referrals that comply with state regulations, letter of authority, and underwriting guidelines.
  • Leadership: Guide, mentor, and coach underwriters and account analysts in both technical and professional skills. Demonstrate expertise and provide regular updates to peers.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in improvement initiatives by generating suggestions, engaging in problem-solving, and using continuous improvement tools to support the team.

Qualifications

  • Intermediate-level knowledge of insurance products, coverage, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, market segments, and the marketplace; insurance finance and actuarial concepts; loss control and risk engineering; marketing techniques; regulatory environment; and reinsurance.
  • Advanced-level knowledge of territory management.
  • Ability to apply underwriting tools, systems, and resources to achieve goals, solve complex problems, and build strong working relationships.
  • Strong mentoring and negotiation skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; three to ten years of relevant experience preferred.
  • CPCU or other professional insurance designation strongly preferred.

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects competitive market value and provides opportunities for progression as employees grow within the role. Some positions may include commission and/or bonus earnings based on factors outlined in the compensation plan.
