Senior Technical Writer
Founded in 2020 by a team of leaders from Braintree, PayPal, and Lending Club, Highnote is an embedded finance company that sets the standard in modern card platform management. As an all-in-one card issuer processor and program management platform, we provide digital-first organizations with the flexibility to seamlessly issue and process payment cards, embed virtual and physical card payments, and integrate ledger and wallet functionalities—empowering businesses to drive growth and profitability. We’ve raised $145M+ and have grown our team to 140+ employees. Headquartered in San Francisco, we operate with team members in 25+ US states and are known for building one of the most advanced payments teams in the industry.
About the role
Highnote is looking for a Senior Technical Writer to own our developer documentation. You'll set the voice and standards for how we explain card issuing, acquiring, and money movement to developers—and build the tooling that holds that standard as the platform grows. You'll join Developer Experience, the team that owns our API, our SDKs, our docs, and our design.
Responsibilities
- Own our API documentation: reference, developer guides, and tutorials
- Collaborate with the engineers who build the API you're documenting, and support the PMs shipping it
- Set the voice, tone, and style of our docs, and encode that standard into our tooling so it holds across content you didn't write yourself
- Build and refine AI workflows that draft, review, and keep documentation in step with the API
- Treat AI agents as a first-class audience alongside human developers
- Structure the documentation so it scales as the product grows
- Build a strong working grasp of card issuing, acquiring, and money movement—enough to write about them accurately, and to know when to ask for clarification
- Define how we measure documentation quality, and use it to decide what comes next
Requirements
- 5+ years across technical documentation and software: as a writer, a docs engineer, or an engineer who owned a documentation system
- Docs-as-code: Markdown or MDX in a static site generator, versioned in git
- Comfortable working like an engineer: branches, pull requests, and CI
- Hands-on experience building AI-backed documentation tooling: generation, review, or drift checks you've shipped and kept running
- Editorial instinct sharp enough to state as a rule a machine can follow
- Able to read an API schema and write valid requests against it: we're GraphQL, and strong REST/OpenAPI experience is a good foundation; you'll be working in GraphQL from week one
- Strong writing for a developer audience
Skills
- Scripting in TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python
- Fintech, payments, or card-issuing experience
Benefits
- Flexible Paid Time Off
- 100% healthcare coverage + 75% coverage for dependents
- 401k program
- Paid Parental Leave: Up to 16 weeks paid leave for the birth parent, and up to 6 weeks paid leave for the non-birth parent
- Equity in Highnote
- Stipend to build out your home office; internet and phone reimbursement
Pay
In compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the annual salary range for applicants is $150,000-$200,000.
Schedule
Positions located in San Francisco are hybrid and include core working days of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in office. Flexible work options are provided based on distance from our downtown SF office.
