Senior Tax Accountant
About the role
A large, well-established Houston-based organization is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant to serve as the sole in-house tax resource and liaison with external tax advisors. This role offers a blend of hands-on tax compliance, partnership and income tax administration, and cross-functional collaboration within a stable, respected company.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the sole internal tax contact, managing relationships and workflows with external tax firm
- Oversee end-to-end tax compliance (federal, state, local, and international) executed by third-party providers
- Prepare and deliver accurate workpapers, data packs, and supporting analyses to enable timely tax return preparation and review
- Partner with external advisors on complex tax areas, reviewing returns, extensions, and estimated tax calculations for completeness and accuracy
- Own key compliance cycles, including return preparation, reconciliations, and issue resolution across applicable tax types
- Lead tax audit and examination responses, coordinating document requests, notices, and communications with authorities and advisors
- Provide tax guidance and research support to Legal, Accounting, Treasury, HR, and Payroll on transactions and ad hoc requests
- Prepare tax-related balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and variance analyses
- Monitor regulatory developments and proactively brief leadership on risks, opportunities, and implementation needs
- Document and refine tax processes, controls, and procedures to strengthen compliance and audit readiness
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, data quality, and control effectiveness across the tax function
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
- CPA certification required
- 7-10 years of progressive tax accounting experience
- Significant partnership taxation experience required (large partnerships, professional service firms, or similar pass-through entities)
- Experience with multi-tax compliance cycles required, including income, franchise, and other applicable tax types
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local tax regulations
- ERP systems experience and tax software applications
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required
- Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and communication skills
