About the role

Demonstrates an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Provides leadership and daily oversight to staff within the service area, acting as a point of contact and expert resource for questions and troubleshooting workflow issues during shifts. Assists in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care that meets the mission and goals of quality care and service excellence at Sanford.

Works under the supervision and delegation authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and conditions that maximize patient safety. Accurately accounts for items used during procedures and maintains an organized sterile field. Demonstrates expert knowledge in aseptic and sterile techniques, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to support providers.

Actively participates in safety measures, maintains an organized sterile field, and ensures all supplies needed for procedures are available. Prepares the surgical environment before procedures, including ensuring supplies and devices are sterile, washing, clipping, transporting, positioning patients, and ensuring aseptic incision sites. May assist in preparing patients prior to procedures, conduct supply quality assurance checks, and verify completeness of items returned from the surgical site. Participates in reconciliation activities.

Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships and well-developed critical thinking skills; must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and adjust to changes in duties with minimal notice. May assist with additional administrative duties for case preparation of patients.

Responsibilities

• Provides services for patients during surgical procedures.
• Assists in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in accordance with established standards.
• Acts as a point of contact and expert resource for troubleshooting workflow issues during shifts.
• Prepares the surgical environment, ensuring supplies and devices are sterile and ready for use.
• Assists in patient preparation, including washing, clipping, transporting, positioning, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
• Conducts sterile and unsterile supply quality assurance checks according to sterilization principles.
• Verifies completeness of items returned from the surgical site and participates in reconciliation activities.
• Makes minor adjustments to instruments to avoid malfunctions and maintain operating condition.
• Utilizes critical thinking and communication skills to educate and evaluate colleagues and assist management in meeting department needs.
• Performs additional administrative duties as needed for case preparation.

Requirements

• Graduate from an approved school for Surgical Technology.
• Minimum two years of surgical technologist experience required.
• National certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within the first 60 days of employment.
• Completes required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training.
• Obtains and maintains required department-specific competencies and certifications.
• If working in North Dakota, must be on the North Dakota Board of Nursing Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) Registry at the time employment begins.
