Job Description

Affords assistance with and may perform routine surgical procedures as directed by the Supervisor and/or attending veterinarian. Monitors anesthesia and vital signs during the procedure. Sets up surgery for assigned studies, including preparing surgical packs, instruments, and gowns. Prepares ancillary documents and necessary supplies for study terminations. Ensures proper preparation and execution of tests and test articles according to written instructions and protocols. Performs routine calculations, interprets results, and routes any positive findings or unusual occurrences to management. Assists in training new associates or those learning a new task. May prepare and maintain reagents needed for testing. Maintains ancillary records (logbooks, worksheets). Independently conducts routine studies according to written instructions and protocols. Contributes to the development and enhancement of documents, test systems, quality systems, and workflows. Stocks supplies for testing. May perform environmental monitoring and trend data. Reviews reagent preparation worksheets, raw data, and documentation as applicable per primary department. Administers the test article or extract at appropriate doses. Conducts daily health observations. May conduct necropsies. Provides care for the welfare of the animals according to written instructions and protocols.

Qualifications & Technical Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline or Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology required
  • CVT, RVT, or LVT preferred
  • ALAT or LAT preferred
  • 2-4 years related work experience
  • Awareness of applicable guidelines and regulations appropriate for primary department, such as USDA, USP, Tripartite, FHSA, CTFA, FSA, ICH, EP, and/or JP
  • Knowledge of research animal physiology, pharmacology, and general animal care
  • Knowledge of metric system, scientific applications, experimental design, and data evaluation
  • Ability to write technical documents and communications (SOPs, protocols, Trackwise records) with minimal management input
  • Proficiency in applicable NAMSA systems (LIMS, Trackwise, MasterControl, etc.) as appropriate per primary department
  • Ability to work in a GMP/GLP environment

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds or more on occasion
  • Standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reaching with hands and arms
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance
  • Close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Frequent exposure to physical activities involving small laboratory animals, small, hand-held surgical tools, and precise movements
  • Frequent exposure to sharps, wet conditions (nonweather), gasses such as CO2 and isoflurane, and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Occasional exposure to BSL2 environments and potential zoonotic diseases

  • Occasionally required to climb or balance

  • Employee must be able to talk and hear
  • May be required to be on-call for continual equipment monitoring
