Senior Structural Engineer

About the role

The Senior Structural Engineer reports administratively to both the Studio Director and the Director of Engineering, with day-to-day task assignments by the Structural Team Leader. This role provides deep structural technical expertise, ensures quality and integration standards are met, and offers technical mentoring to the structural engineering team. The position independently leads structural planning, designing, engineering, and construction document production, and is responsible for the overall quality of the technical output of their discipline. This individual will be directly involved in maintaining and growing client relationships as a structural engineering expert.

Management & Operational responsibilities

• Maintain an 80% billable expectation related to actively managing structural engineering on projects and fulfilling all duties of an engineer
• Manage multiple, simultaneous projects from beginning to end, from Design Basis through specifications and submittals
• Demonstrate ability to clearly communicate project objectives, problems, solutions, and scope changes with clients, field personnel, and internal staff
• Work closely with customers, partners, and colleagues to achieve deadlines while delivering a quality product

Technical leadership

• Provide structural technical leadership and ensure quality and the highest level of structural engineering services to external and internal clients
• Apply, teach, and mentor others in subject matter expertise, including knowledge of building codes, regulations, requirements, building materials, construction methods, and procedures for project work
• Manage the proper sequencing of construction documents
• Facilitate close work with clients, field personnel, and internal staff to achieve deadlines and quality work
• Work well in a team/collaborative setting
• Manage information flow and look for ways to improve project-related processes
• Maintain pride in craft; desire to stay current and serve as a subject matter expert to identify trends and technical advances
• Stamp/seal self-produced documents
• Work with modest supervision and guidance
• Direct drafting to support your structural design
• Organize and prioritize personal workload and make necessary adjustments to meet deadlines; be results oriented and milestone driven

Talent development & hiring

• Contribute to junior team member skill advancements via coaching and/or mentoring
• Assist in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new structural team members

Business development

• Analyze project scope and assist in authoring proposals and contracts
• Nurture positive relationships with existing clients and partners through project work
