Senior Strategic Sourcing Manager - Remote
About the role
Accountable for leading, guiding and directing the functional responsibilities within an area of assignment. Enables ministry-level or enterprise-wide functional strategy to address internal or external business and regulatory issues. Provides functional expertise and ensures fulfillment of performance and service standards. Responsible for consistent operating performance and achieving financial goals. Identifies, defines and solves complex problems that impact the management and direction of the business. Collaborates with Services Areas, Regions and Health Ministries to ensure consistency and integration of strategy and operations while maintaining awareness of new industry developments and standards. Provides decision support, operations and/or optimization leadership focus.

- Providing advice, guidance and leadership to RHM and Region leaders in developing strategies and in the achievement of performance goals
- Enabling collaboration across and within service area, RHM and Regions to ensure consistency and integration of strategy and operations
- Providing advice, guidance and leadership to service area, functional area, RHM and Regions
- Leading standardization/systemness and optimization of policy, process, methodology, establishing a national community of practice
- Overseeing vendor/contract labor management including centralizing strategy and optimizing spend
- Collaborating in system-wide strategy development and deployment of functional area priorities and initiatives
- Responsible for supporting regional efforts to comply with functional area priorities
- Accountable for the selection, evaluation and overall success of the functional leadership teams
- Organization-wide focal point for establishing functional strategies and governance over financials and staffing
- Accountable for communication between service area functional area, RHM and Region leaders
- Responsible for measuring and reporting KPIs/metrics and value delivery
- Providing advice, guidance and leadership for the colleague life cycle
- Maintaining a working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws/regulations, Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct, as well as other policies, procedures and guidelines in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior and safe work practices
Functional Role
Leads strategic sourcing activities for complex initiatives with the ability/goal of achieving significant cost reductions, supplanted with year-over-year cost and productivity improvements in the total cost of goods and services procured while maintaining or improving product quality and vendor service levels. Leads, facilitates, assembles and manages cross-functional teams across the System with Regional Health Ministries (RHMs) to drive system-wide priorities, achieve cost reductions, service and quality excellence, and knowledge transfer for replication of “best practice.” The Manager has expert knowledge and experience in strategic sourcing processes, supporting analysis, and the ability to create and implement strategic commodity plans.
- Managing several simultaneous competitive sourcing processes, complex contract negotiations of high value, and limiting exposure to the System on high-risk projects
- Providing oversight of assigned staff which may include Sourcing Managers, Sourcing Analysts, Contract Administrators and other staff
- Directing the sourcing activities of assigned team and sourcing categories
- Maintaining business relationships with suppliers and Trinity’s group purchasing organization (GPO), negotiating terms supporting the business plan objectives and protecting Trinity from business continuity risk
- Working with legal to develop contracts to memorialize terms and conditions of the trade relationship and monitoring supplier performance and conducting business reviews
- Representing Trinity’s interest on GPO advisory boards, providing guidance on the GPO negotiation strategies, and supporting contract implementation across the ministry
- Driving system contract compliance by optimizing the use of national group purchasing, custom group purchasing, and Trinity Health system agreements
- Demonstrating detailed understanding of products, service offerings, and financial impact
- Providing strategic direction for sourcing activities based on total cost of ownership, required product/service/equipment/IT specifications, supplier strengths/weaknesses, safety, evidence-based information and desired outcomes
- Analyzing relevant supply markets to provide information to identify requirements of RHMs and advocating for strategic needs and appropriate supplier bid lists
- Supporting the annual business planning and budget guidance processes
- Collecting, cleaning and validating large datasets from multiple sources to ensure accuracy and integrity
- Analyzing data to identify trends, patterns and anomalies that inform business strategies
- Developing and maintaining dashboards, reports and visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Excel or similar platforms
- Performing ad-hoc analysis and providing actionable recommendations to stakeholders
- Conducting category assessments including spend analysis, demand forecasting, supply market intelligence and risk evaluation to identify value creation opportunities
- Leading enterprise spend management activities across assigned categories, ensuring alignment with organizational financial goals and budget targets
- Speaking to year-over-year spend differences and challenges within assigned portfolio
- Prioritizing projects for assigned commodities
- Leading strategy development, managing Request for Information (RFI), Request for Proposal (RFP) and Request for Quotation (RFQ) processes
- Leading analysis and negotiations
- Leading cross-functional teams for strategic sourcing initiatives to drive system-wide standardization, cost reductions, service and quality excellence, knowledge transfer for replication of best practice, information technology development and assisting with local implementation of various activities
- Developing, executing and communicating strategies in collaboration with senior-level management, Value Analysis, Operations, TIS and key stakeholders on overall process, timing and objectives
- Managing relationships to ensure internal customers and stakeholders are actively engaged
- Directing the personnel and financial activities of functional area colleagues as assigned
- Setting priorities and goals for the sourcing team and ensuring objectives are consistent with system and departmental goals
- Conducting annual reviews with direct reports, managing performance issues and promoting colleague career development
- Responsible for hiring, orienting, managing, promoting, disciplining and terminating direct report colleagues
- Providing leadership guidance to colleagues in adherence to the System strategic sourcing process
- Representing the Strategic Sourcing Director to fill temporary vacancies or as otherwise required
- Promoting a lean/process excellence culture and participating in joint quality improvement initiatives with SO and RHM colleagues
- Motivating and leading strategic sourcing lean program initiatives to increase productivity and improve end-to-end process efficiencies
- Engaging suppliers in the selection processes and maintaining business relationships that are conducted legally, ethically and in accordance with Trinity Health Policies/Procedures and the Organizational Integrity Program
- Developing a primary liaison for key suppliers within the assigned category and conducting business reviews with key suppliers
- Serving as the subject matter expert for all category supplier engagement questions from Trinity colleagues
- Maintaining business relationships with the GPO leadership and staff, providing input on sourcing strategy and representing Trinity on advisory boards as assigned
- Planning, managing and overseeing the life cycle of complex medium and large sourcing projects involving multiple stakeholders; significant facilitation, standardization and process change to multiple business units
- Using working knowledge on contract construction, reviewing and redlining draft language for discussion; close working relationships with legal for contract issues requiring legal input
- Utilizing Supply Chain Management’s digital systems, including strategic sourcing and contract lifecycle management applications, and ensuring adoption and use by team
- Advancing strategic initiatives for the organization by providing leadership and direction to standing advisory teams
- Creating an overall value equation for presentation and review with advisory teams for system-wide recommendations
- Partnering with the Finance department to ensure that forecasted savings are validated
- Ensuring effective handoff of executed contracts to business owner, Supply Chain verticals and other stakeholder departments as applicable, including accurate PO placement, broad understanding of contract value and milestones, and implementation expectations
- Tracking and measuring supplier performance against scorecards on an ongoing basis, as applicable, and conducting supplier business reviews as necessary
- Facilitating dialogue with local business owners, RHM senior management and Supply Chain staff to remove barriers when necessary; engaging suppliers and RHMs to ensure timely resolution of service issues
- Establishing procedures for managing a comprehensive sourcing process for assigned products/services across Trinity Health
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, supply chain management, portfolio-specific clinical discipline or a related field
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in a multi-entity and multi-level organization or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience
- Leadership experience
- Comprehensive knowledge of strategic sourcing, in-depth knowledge of contract portfolio and demonstrated ability to provide complex financial analysis
- Comprehensive knowledge and skills in advanced data analytics and procurement practices including intermediate to advanced Excel, Power BI, Tableau or similar applications, vendor relationships and market analysis for trends
- Ability to develop work plans and lead a team of sourcing professionals with proven ability to translate category insights into sourcing strategies and measurable business outcomes
- Understanding of Lean Manufacturing/Operations and technical problem-solving concepts and techniques
- Demonstrated skills in all aspects of project management from initialization through completion utilizing detailed work plans
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and grow supplier and system stakeholder relationships
- Ability to independently lead, consult, negotiate and communicate to engage physicians, executives and all levels of the organization to influence and drive results
- Ability to address conflict, along with willingness and desire to challenge conventional thinking from all levels throughout the organization, including senior-level management
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and perform cost analysis with a solid understanding of financial management concepts
