Senior Story Desk Editor

KXTV-ABC10, the TEGNA-owned affiliate in Sacramento, is seeking a Senior Story Desk Editor to drive daily editorial execution with a focus on digital, social, and streaming platforms.
About the role
The Senior Story Desk Editor will be part of the Story Management Desk (SMD), leading a unified workflow for planning, producing, and curating stories across all platforms. This role requires decisive editorial judgment, strong writing skills, and the ability to thrive under tight deadlines while collaborating with news management to deliver engaging content.
Responsibilities
- Help with newsroom coverage during breaking news, ensuring accuracy, urgency, and balance.
- Identify unique local and regional story opportunities through sourcing and market trend analysis, resulting in exclusive, high-performing stories.
- Create, edit, and optimize content for digital platforms, including websites, mobile, streaming, and social media, with a focus on engagement and conversion.
- Execute audience growth strategies using content analytics and tracking tools (e.g., Tableau, CrowdTangle, Google Analytics).
- Provide real-time insights and adjust coverage plans based on actionable data.
- Support story desk editors, MSJs, producers, and photojournalists with digital best practices.
- Edit content for accuracy, grammar, AP style, fairness, and ethical considerations.
- Use metrics to inform coverage and improve audience reach.
- Support newsroom operations, coverage planning, and training as needed.
- Uphold TEGNA’s journalistic standards and values across all platforms.
Requirements
- At least three years of journalism experience in a local newsroom, digital production, or related role.
- Strong news judgment and ability to make fast, sound editorial decisions under pressure.
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to produce accurate and compelling content quickly.
- Experience with newsroom systems and CMS tools.
- Organizational skills to manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
- A collaborative, solutions-focused mindset that thrives in a team environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or equivalent experience.
Pay
$28.85—$36.06 USD per hour.
