Job Summary

The Perception team at Waymo is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the development and continuous improvement of object detection systems. This role involves working closely with product and safety partners to achieve Waymo's scaling goals, developing technical roadmaps, and leading a high-performing team.

About the Role

The Perception team builds the system that learns the spatial-temporal representation and semantic meanings of the surrounding environment of the self-driving car. This role requires expertise in machine learning and computer vision, with experience in developing and optimizing models for real-world applications.

Responsibilities

• Own object detection quality and work with product and safety partners on short- and long-term improvement goals.
• Develop and execute technical roadmaps to achieve object detection quality goals.
• Lead the analysis of real-world object detection issues and develop technical requirements for improving object detection quality.
• Build resilient and high-performing teams through people development and hiring.
• Contribute to the development of technical roadmaps, defining team OKRs, developing believable plans to achieve the OKRs, and driving the roadmap execution.
• Make project staffing decisions, technical decisions, and drive escalations; ultimately accountable for delivering projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent deep learning experience, or 5+ years of experience in Machine Learning and/or Computer Vision.
• 3+ years of experience in managing ML engineering or research teams.
• Experience with Python.
• Experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch or JAX.

Preferred Qualifications

• MS or PhD Degree in Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Science or a similar discipline.
• Publishations at top-tier conferences like CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICLR, ICML, ICRA, RSS, NeurIPS, AAAI, IJCV, PAMI.
• Experience with C++.
• Experience with real-time system design.
