Senior Staff TLM, Perception, Object Detection

Job Summary

The Perception team at Waymo is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the development and optimization of object detection systems within the Waymo Driver. This role involves working closely with product and safety partners to ensure continuous improvement in object detection quality, leading the analysis of real-world issues, and developing technical solutions to enhance the Waymo Driver.

Responsibilities

• Owns object detection quality and collaborates with product and safety partners on short- and long-term improvement goals.
• Develops and executes technical roadmaps to achieve object detection quality goals.
• Analyzes real-world object detection issues and develops technical requirements for improvement.
• Builds and leads resilient and high-performing teams through people development and hiring.
• Contributes to the development of technical roadmaps, defining team OKRs, and driving roadmap execution.
• Makes project staffing decisions, technical decisions, and drives escalations, ultimately accountable for delivering projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent deep learning experience, or Master's or PhD in Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in Machine Learning and/or Computer Vision.
• 3+ years of experience managing ML engineering or research teams.
• Experience with Python.
• Experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.

Preferred Qualifications

• MS or PhD degree in Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Science, or a similar discipline.
• Publishations at top-tier conferences like CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICLR, ICML, ICRA, RSS, NeurIPS, AAAI, IJCV, PAMI.
• Experience with C++.
• Experience with real-time system design.
