Senior/Staff Software Engineer, Operational Applications & Platforms

About the role

The Operational Tools software team at Zoox is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to help architect and build the critical systems that power our autonomous ride-sharing service. This team operates at the intersection of autonomy, operations, and user experience—owning the tools that enable safe, reliable, and scalable fleet operations at production level.

Responsibilities

• Arcitect and own mission-critical systems – Lead the design and development of full-stack platforms that power real-time vehicle monitoring, operational tooling, and live rider support across our autonomous fleet.
• Set technical direction across the stack – Act as a technical leader spanning frontend, backend, and infrastructure, driving architecture decisions that ensure scalability, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
• Lead through influence and mentorship – Elevate the team by guiding design discussions, providing high-quality code reviews, and mentoring engineers to raise the overall technical bar.
• Drive cross-functional innovation – Partner closely with product, design, and operations to identify high-impact opportunities and deliver solutions to complex, real-world challenges in autonomous mobility.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience), with 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, including experience building applications with Node.js, HTML, and CSS.
• Deep understanding of modern web technologies and architecture, including performance, scalability, and maintainability considerations.
• Experience with modern frontend frameworks such as Vue, React, or Svelte, with an eye toward building intuitive, high-quality user interfaces.
• Proven ability to design and architect large-scale, full-stack systems, paired with strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively drive alignment and execution across cross-functional teams.

Bonus Qualifications

• Experience with Python or C++.
• Familiarity with robotics and 3D spatial reasoning.

Pay

$195,000 - $305,000 a year Base Salary Range
