About the role
The Senior Staff Accountant, Accounts Payable supports the Office of the Vice President for Finance by performing daily accounting operations such as processing invoices, requesting payments, and reconciling accounts. They also perform complex month-end close activities, review and authorize transactions, resolve rejected direct deposit payments, ensure proper classification of supplier and customer tax withholding, participate in year-end tax filings, respond to inquiries, and provide training on accounting policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Processes invoices, requests payments, and reconciles accounts
- Performs complex month-end close activities
- Reviews and authorizes transactions such as invoices, human subjects, and wire payments
- Resolves rejected direct deposit payments from the bank
- Ensures proper classification of supplier and customer tax withholding for RFP transactions
- Participates in year-end tax filings
- Responds to email and phone inquiries and provides exemplary customer service
- Trains members of the MIT community on accounting policies and procedures
- Participates in internal and external audits
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration
- Minimum of three years of experience in financial operations including accounting and account reconciliation
- Demonstrated experience with accounting software, preferably SAP
- Knowledge of accounting principles and relevant federal regulations for accounts payable
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, video conferencing and collaboration tools
- Able to meet performance metrics assigned for the unit
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a high volume of work, balance competing priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment
- Able to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills

This is a benefits eligible, one year term position with the possibility of renewal for up to three years.
