Responsibilities

• Design automatic sprinkler systems including fire pumps, tanks, wet, dry, pre-action, and deluge systems using working knowledge of fire sprinkler codes.
• Perform hydraulic calculations for each design.
• Prepare submittal packages for the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and subsequent correspondence to achieve design approval.
• Participate in coordination and design kick-off meetings with contractors.
• Prepare fabrication lists for pipe fabrication vendors and requisition materials for jobs.
• Perform field surveys to ensure designs are appropriate for structures.
• Assist field personnel with design-related installation issues.
• Prepare and submit final job close-out documents after final acceptance testing.
• Understand and follow SFS’s Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication program, policies, and procedures.
• Periodically attend seminars or training sessions to stay current with technology, codes, and standards changes.
• Communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
• Assist the design manager with reviewing submittal drawings and fabrication lists for accuracy.
• Train design trainees on all applicable aspects of fire protection design.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• 5-10 years of experience as a sprinkler designer.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required; NICET II or NICET III and/or state-required certification required (equivalent experience considered if pursuing NICET education).
• Construction experience, mechanical aptitude, and basic/advanced math skills.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to comply with SFS’s Drug and Alcohol policy and background screening requirements, including customer-specific requirements.

Skills

• Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating effectively in English.
• Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with HydraCad and/or other CAD software (preferred).

Physical & Work Environment

• Ability to sit for long periods and occasionally bend, kneel, balance, lift up to 20 lbs, walk, stand, ascend/descend stairs, drive, twist, and reach above/below shoulders.
• Frequent driving and walking for extended periods.
• Consistent indoor office work, occasionally alone or with others.
• Occasional outdoor work with exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical hazards, and noise.
• Occasional requirement to wear personal protective equipment per company safety policies.
