About the role

AWS Fintech is seeking a results-oriented, innovative Senior Software Development Engineer to help create the next generation of distributed, scalable financial systems. You will work on real-world problems at a global scale, own systems end-to-end, and influence technology that impacts customers worldwide. This role involves designing flexible, scalable solutions and tackling complex challenges in large-scale computing using data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming.

Responsibilities

  • Drive technical vision and architecture for a cohesive finance platform, unifying multiple offerings into a seamless builder experience.
  • Design and implement critical-path systems; own the architecture from whiteboard to production, balancing scalability with speed-to-market.
  • Define and raise engineering standards across the team—code quality, operational readiness, testing patterns, and documentation.
  • Solve hard technical problems, such as sub-second OLAP queries over petabyte-scale financial datasets, building trust through lineage spanning hundreds of pipelines, and designing AI-driven root-cause analysis for data quality at enterprise scale.
  • Influence data strategy and investment decisions by partnering with Principal Engineers and senior leaders.
  • Mentor engineers, raise the hiring bar, and cultivate a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Research, prototype, and publish design documents, POCs, and recommendations that influence technical and business leaders across AWS Fintech.
  • Identify hotspots and eliminate duplicate work across teams by thinking in platforms and building with empathy for engineers who consume your systems.

A day in the life

  • Participate in design and code review sessions, writing and reviewing critical-path code while providing architectural guidance.
  • Deep-dive into system performance, operational metrics, and customer pain points to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Principal Engineers, and partner teams to refine requirements and align on technical direction.
  • Prototype and evaluate new technologies, frameworks, or architectural patterns to solve emerging challenges.
  • Engage in operational reviews, on-call rotations, and incident response to ensure systems meet AWS Finance’s reliability standards.
  • Mentor team members through pairing, design discussions, and code reviews.
  • Author and iterate on design documents, technical specs, and architectural decision records.
  • Participate in sprint planning and backlog refinement, prioritizing technical debt, feature work, and operational improvements.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language.
  • 5+ years of experience leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability, and scaling) of new and existing systems.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.

Pay

Base salary range: $168,100.00 - $227,400.00 USD annually (Seattle, WA). Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments, restricted stock units (RSUs), and comprehensive benefits such as health insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.

Benefits

  • Health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D, with options for supplemental life plans).
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Mental Health Support.
