Senior Risk Control Consultant Field - Morristown, NJ

About the role
Provide the Underwriter with account knowledge as it relates to hazards, controls, and management. Evaluate how a company identifies and manages their inherent risk factors. Differentiate the account from others in similar classes of business. This role works with our largest, most complex, and all-lines accounts and reports to the Risk Control Field Director or Managing Risk Control Consultant.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a consistent field presence, spending approximately 20% - 50% of the time onsite with customers. Travel may entail long-distance, overnight, or multi-night trips depending on business needs and territory alignment.
- Partner with Underwriting to select, retain, and grow a profitable book of business.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with Underwriting, Claim, Risk Control Specialists, and Brokers to service customers as a unified team.
- Complete all-lines risk assessment evaluations for high-complexity businesses such as manufacturing, large warehouse operations, challenging property and products liability exposures, multi-location companies, and large fleet exposures.
- Write technically detailed reports that communicate a clear assessment of risk and effectively articulate recommendations.
- Discover and evaluate customer needs through loss analysis and customer readiness to provide Risk Control products and services.
- Identify uncontrolled exposures to influence customers to make improvements and take corrective actions to mitigate loss potential.
- Provide solutions for risk mitigation using extensive resources.
- Stay current with technical subject matters, regulatory environments, and emerging issues.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in specialty areas (e.g., Fleet, Sprinkler Contractor, Inland Marine, Industrial Hygiene, Human Factors & Ergonomics) to support the broader team with "Level of Expertise" consults.
- Create a valued customer experience through each assessment and service encounter.
- Maintain core Senior Risk Control Consultant responsibilities while taking on higher-level project work impacting the Risk Control organization or Travelers enterprise.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Seven years of experience in safety, risk control/management, or a related field such as occupational/environmental health and safety, science, engineering, construction, manufacturing, or relevant military experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must have or be able to attain appropriate certification to meet state-specific requirements, where applicable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in environmental health and safety, engineering, construction management, basic sciences, or related technical fields.
- Advanced level knowledge of the insurance industry and business acumen.
- Recognized relevant certifications (such as ASP, CSP, ARM, CFPS).
- Technical aptitude and detail-oriented mindset.
- Superior communication skills—both written and verbal.
- Ability to quickly establish credibility and rapport with others.
- Experience working in a collaborative environment.
- Critical thinking and influencing skills to drive business needs.
- Ability to negotiate change to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Ability to give and receive coaching and feedback.
Pay
Annual base salary range: $104,000 - $171,700. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of a comprehensive compensation and benefits program.
