About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Real Estate Accountant – Generalist to strengthen and support our accounting team. This role will float across both the Finance/GL and Operations sides of the business, focusing on period-end close, development accounting, financial reporting, lease commission accounting, property tax estimates/appeals, lease administration, tenant billing, and CAM reconciliations. You will work closely with the Controller and other Senior Accountants to ensure accuracy across properties, tenants, projects, and ledgers.
Responsibilities
- Financial Close & Reporting
- Own period-end close with the team, preparing financial statement reporting and results analysis.
- Assist with calculating and recording property tax accruals.
- Maintain the AR ledger, process write-offs, and support cash application.
- Support the annual budget process and MRI–Sage integration projects.
- Real Estate Development & Construction Accounting
- Manage the accounting side of construction draws—prepare draw requests and reconcile invoices against budgets.
- Track budget vs. actual by project and job cost code; flag variances, reallocations, and change orders.
- Partner with the Owner's Representative/Development Manager on draw approvals and budget status.
- Property Tax Estimates and Appeals
- Log assessment notices, flag major increases, and manage the appeals process with tax consultants.
- Track appeal outcomes and keep consultants informed of property acquisitions/dispositions.
- Provide property tax estimates on new acquisitions and development projects.
- Lease Administration & Tenant Billing
- Review lease onboardings, renewals, and terminations in MRI; run the monthly Rent Increase report and issue tenant statements.
- Lead annual CAM reconciliations and estimates; help set up new buildings in MRI.
- Cross-functional and Process Improvement
- Peer-review journal entries and reconciliations from other team members; serve as backup across close functions.
- Help document accounting policies; take on special projects like acquisitions, financing, and lender reporting.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field (master's preferred).
- CPA or equivalent professional certification strongly preferred.
- 5-10 years of real estate accounting experience across financial and operations work.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Proficiency with property management and accounting systems (MRI and Sage strongly preferred).
- Advanced Excel skills.

Schedule
This is an on-site role based in Brentwood, TN, with in-office work 5 days per week. Minimal travel is expected.
