Senior Quality Assurance Engineer - Data & Analytics
Locations: Houston, Texas-USA | Madison, Alabama-USA • Workplace Type: Remote
About the role
Octave is looking for a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer who knows that a polished dashboard is only as trustworthy as the data behind it. You’ll help ensure the accuracy, reliability, and performance of analytics used across our global Public Safety software portfolio, including the HxGN OnCall application suite. Embedded within an Agile delivery team, you’ll own quality across data pipelines, reporting platforms, dashboards, and analytics services. You’ll work alongside Developers, Data Engineers, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters to uncover risks early and ensure operational data can be trusted when it matters most. Experience in Public Safety, emergency response, or another mission-critical environment is especially valuable.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the embedded quality expert on an Agile/SAFe team delivering analytics and reporting capabilities.
- Collaborate with Product Owners, Data Engineers, and Developers to shape user stories, acceptance criteria, data mappings, and validation scenarios.
- Design and execute tests for ETL pipelines, data transformations, reports, dashboards, semantic models, and analytics services.
- Trace data from source systems through pipelines, database objects, reporting models, and final visualizations.
- Use SQL to validate accuracy, completeness, transformations, aggregations, nulls, duplicates, and source-to-target reconciliation.
- Test Power BI reports and dashboards, including measures, filters, relationships, drill-through behavior, refreshes, and KPI calculations.
- Diagnose whether reporting discrepancies originate in source data, ETL logic, SQL, semantic models, or visual configurations.
- Validate pipeline failure handling, reruns, partial loads, performance, and recovery scenarios.
- Perform functional, integration, regression, and exploratory testing throughout each sprint.
- Document and triage defects with clear reproduction steps, data samples, reconciliation queries, and impact assessments.
- Help establish analytics-testing standards, reusable validation practices, and effective test-data strategies.
- Maintain test cases, defects, and traceability in Azure DevOps while actively participating in Agile ceremonies.
Requirements
- At least five years of experience in software QA, data QA, or software testing within Agile teams.
- Hands-on experience testing ETL pipelines, analytics platforms, reporting systems, or other data-intensive applications.
- Strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, duplicate detection, source-to-target reconciliation, and validation of views and stored procedures.
- Practical experience testing Power BI reports and dashboards—not simply viewing or consuming them.
- The ability to trace a reported value from a visualization back through its measure, model, database objects, transformation logic, and source data.
- Familiarity with Power BI measures, filter context, relationships, refreshes, and gateways.
- A strong understanding of QA methodologies, test design, risk-based testing, and defect management.
- Strong investigative, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- A proactive, accountable approach and the curiosity to keep expanding your technical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Public Safety, emergency response, or other mission-critical systems.
- Experience testing SSIS, SSAS, or Azure Data Factory pipelines.
- Knowledge of dimensional modeling, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions, or medallion architectures.
- Experience with Power BI semantic models, DAX, row-level security, gateways, or deployment troubleshooting.
- Experience building automated tests with Playwright and TypeScript.
- Experience with API testing, CI pipelines, or cloud-based data architectures—particularly Microsoft Azure.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related technical field—or equivalent professional experience.
Location and interview requirements
Fully remote opportunity for the right candidate. Participation in an in-person interview and/or completion of mandatory in-person training are required conditions of employment.
