Pelican Bay State Prison is situated along the Pacific coast, among redwoods and pristine rivers, 20 miles from the Oregon border. Its mission is to provide constitutional medical, dental, and mental health care in a timely, safe, and efficient manner, addressing preventative health services, chronic disease management, and public health issues. Primary care services are delivered through six daily outpatient clinics, a 24/7 Correctional Treatment Center (CTC) for inpatient services, and an Urgent Treatment Area (UTA).

About the Role

Under the general direction of the Chief Psychologist, the Senior Psychologist will assume overall administrative responsibilities for programs within the Mental Health Services Delivery System (MHSDS). As the Program Director, responsibilities include:

• Providing evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment for inmates.
• Initial acceptance of inmates from other levels of care.
• Participating in intake assessments, including treatment planning.
• Facilitating the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.
• Administering psychological tests and conducting research as needed.

This is a limited-term position for 12 months, which may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Pay

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) reduces the base salary of full-time employees in Bargaining Unit 19 by 3% and provides 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries listed do not reflect this reduction.

Additional pay benefits may include:

• A $10,000 one-time recruitment and retention stipend for eligible clinicians, contingent on remaining employed with CCHCS for six months.
• A monthly recruitment and retention differential during the first year (totaling $20,000) for eligible individuals.
• A $5,000 referral bonus for CDCR/CCHCS employees who refer a candidate successfully hired and employed for 90 days.

Requirements

• License: Possession of a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology. Applicants in the process of securing this license may apply but must obtain it before appointment.
• Education: Possession of an earned Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an educational institution meeting the criteria of Section 2914 of the Medical Board of California's Business and Professions Code.
• Experience: Either:
  • One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Psychologist Clinical, Correctional Facility, or Staff Psychologist (any specialty); or
  • Two years of postdoctoral, postinternship experience in the practice of psychology involving assessment and treatment, and either training, research, consultation, or program planning in mental health services.
