Duty Statement

The Senior Psychiatrist (Supervisor) is responsible for developing, overseeing, and directing the quality and operations of Physician Services within psychiatry for the psychiatric treatment of individuals housed at Salinas Valley State Prison.

About the Role

This position plays a crucial role in the overall healthcare and rehabilitation efforts at Salinas Valley State Prison and the Psychiatric Inpatient Program in Soledad, Monterey County. The incumbent will lead a team of healthcare professionals to ensure that inmates receive comprehensive psychiatric care.

Responsibilities

• Develops and implements policies and procedures for psychiatric services.
• Oversees the daily operations of the psychiatric unit, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Mentors and supervises junior staff, providing guidance and training.
• Collaborates with other healthcare providers to coordinate care plans for inmates.
• Provides clinical supervision and consultation to staff.
• Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss inmate cases.
• Ensures the provision of high-quality psychiatric care, including crisis intervention and medication management.
• Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of psychiatric services.
• Conducts regular assessments of inmate mental health needs and adjusts treatment plans accordingly.
• Participates in research and development projects related to psychiatric care in correctional settings.

Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must possess:

• A Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited institution.
• A current California Medical License.
• At least five years of experience in psychiatry, with at least three years in a correctional setting.
• Experience in leading and supervising a team of healthcare professionals.
• Knowledge of correctional healthcare systems and the unique challenges faced by inmates.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with inmates, staff, and external stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
• Experience with medication management and psychopharmacology.

Qualifications

Additional qualifications include:

• Completion of a residency program in psychiatry.
• Experience with evidence-based practices in correctional psychiatry.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and their application in correctional settings.
• Experience with forensic psychiatry and understanding of legal and ethical considerations in correctional healthcare.
• Experience with substance abuse disorders and addiction treatment.
• Experience with mental health screenings and assessments.

Pay

The starting salary range for this position is $64,520 to $77,150 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

Schedule

The Senior Psychiatrist (Supervisor) works a standard 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend shifts as needed to meet the demands of the position.
