Senior Process Engineer - Water/Wastewater (Kansas City | Omaha)

About the role

Burns & McDonnell’s growing Water Practice is seeking a Senior Water/Wastewater Process Engineer. This role involves leading process design for water or wastewater projects in municipal or industrial settings, including treatment and conveyance systems, industrial water/wastewater treatment, and utility systems.

You will perform day-to-day process technical work, project planning, and management of scope, schedule, and budget. The position also includes developing project objectives, interacting with clients on technical matters, supporting client development, and coordinating with regulatory agencies.

Additional responsibilities include mentoring junior staff, collaborating on design-build project deliveries, and expanding career growth opportunities within a rapidly growing national water practice.

Responsibilities

• Lead process design and execution of municipal or industrial water and/or wastewater treatment projects.
• Perform technical work, project planning, and manage scope, schedule, and budget.
• Develop critical project objectives and performance goals; interact with clients on technical matters.
• Support client development, technical sales, proposal preparation, and technical presentations.
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies as applicable.
• Plan, organize, and communicate project technical needs to department management; mentor junior staff.
• Provide support to design-build project deliveries in collaboration with Burns & McDonnell’s Construction/Design-Build group.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 7 years of related process engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
• Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 7 years of related process engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
• Alternatively, a Master's Degree in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering and 6 years of related process engineering experience required. EPC project experience preferred.
• Background in water or wastewater process engineering, including treatment systems, plant facilities, or industrial water utilities preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of industry, government, and public clients is preferred. Existing relationships with local or statewide clients is a plus.
• Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Strong knowledge of process design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).
• Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Experience with process simulation software (e.g., Hysys, Aspen, HTRI) is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
• Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills and ability to work methodically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
• Ability to travel (25% of the time).
• Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
