Senior Probation Officer (Domestic Violence Unit)

About the role

Supervision of adults referred from Chesterfield Juvenile Domestic Relations Court for domestic related offenses including family and/or household violence. In addition, supervision of adults from Chesterfield Circuit and General District Courts whose offenses are domestic and/or sexual in nature.

Monitor and enforce compliance with court ordered supervision conditions and provide notifications to the court of non-compliance. Provide extensive and accurate written notification to Judges, Commonwealth’s Attorneys and defense attorneys. Testify in court as required. Work in partnership with professionals comprising Chesterfield County’s Coordinated Community Response to domestic violence (CCR), including law enforcement, prosecutors, victim service providers, Domestic Violence Intervention Program providers, and system-based service providers (DSS, CPS/APS, Mental Health Support Services).

Responsibilities

• Encourage clients to engage with Peer Recovery Specialists.
• Perform drug and alcohol testing.
• Perform Administrative duties including quality assurance functions associated with supervision.
• Aiding in reviewing and correcting court correspondence, facilitate meetings, mentor new staff, and aid in closure of cases.
• Perform special projects and other work as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology or Social Work preferred.
• Three years of relevant experience in a Human Services/Criminal Justice field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Knowledge of criminal justice system and community supervision.
• Caseload management skills and knowledge of legal and evidence-based practices.
• Computer competency to include operating a personal computer, work issued cell phone and related software, and other standard office equipment.
• Accurate and timely documentation in multiple databases.
• Completion of Core Skills through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
• VcIn certification (to be provided upon hiring).
• Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of the use of power and control over another in the context of an intimate partner relationship.
• Sensitivity towards victims.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to accurately apply policies, practices, and the Code of Virginia to probation supervision.
• Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Effective Practices in Correctional Settings (EPICS).
• Ability to build internal and external relationships.

Skills

• Strong and appropriate communication with victim service organizations (Victim Witness and/or Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center).
• Ability to make sound decisions in high stress situations and judgments that may impact a client’s freedom and community safety.
• Emphasis on continuous learning, training, and career development.
• Experience in a recovery-based organization.
• Experience with a variety of bilingual staff.
• Experience with a proven track record for developing officers, senior officers, supervisors, and directors.
